It can be easy for professionals in special education to become lost in the sea of acronyms, legalese, and seemingly endless prescribed procedures for special education services. Fialka and her coauthors move us far beyond these procedural elements to refocus our attention on people and relationships. They offer brilliant guidance for navigating relationships as families and providers work together to support children. This will be required reading in my course on families in the future.

I recommend this book to anyone faced with an IEP, or any situation where you need to understand and be understood to come to an agreement. The book deals with two parties who have the best interests of a special needs child, but come with different ideas on the best solution. Fialka and Feldman present many ideas, illustrated with interesting stories, on how to make the process go from awkward missteps to smoother dancing.

For decades too many progressives educators and social justice activists have "forgotten" our children with disabilities. "Partnering for Children with Disabilities: A Dance that Matters" helps us listen to each other and learn from each other so a new vision of education emerges that respects the potential of all our children. This book will help all parents and professionals to listen, learn and create meaningful dialogue that will support our children who have disabilities.
