I ordered and read this book before applying for SSDI. I was successful on my first try, did not have to appeal. Of course, I am disabled, you can't succeed it you are not. However, I feel the book helped me avoid errors in the application process and helped me focus at a time when I was falling apart and very scared.

Whether you're personally going for it or helping somebody file their disability claim, there is a lot to know. This book does not tell you all you should know but everybody has to start somewhere.

The last chapter of the book explains why it's a very good idea to engage an attorney. You can see more than a hundred attorneys on YouTube explain why claimants need an attorney. I too think claimants need an attorney - unless their initial application is approved. An attorney should help a lot at the hearing.

In my view, this book is worth it for the convenience of getting a lot of pertinent information up front. Otherwise, the reader might have to sort through many web sites to discover the same facts. One can see from the table of contents that the author covers only the most fundamental facts that every claimant needs to know.

This book by necessity does not cover a ton of information that claimants probably want to know. For example, one can go online and literally see the acceptance/dismissal/denial history of the federal administrative judges - all Social Security judges in the country. If it sounds unfair that judges in one state will have a significantly higher denial rate than judges in another state, it's because it is unfair.

The system is not uniformly fair and can easily take two (2) years to even get to the hearing stage. Attorneys seem to function in part as cheerleaders to encourage claimants to continue to prosecute their claims when they appear strong.

My guess is the best thing this book will do is help inform most readers on why their claims are likely to be rejected so that nobody will rely too heavily on a good outcome. I wish readers the best of luck in this difficult process.

I had purchased this for myself once diagnosed with Stage IV cancer. I followed the guidelines in the book, applied for Social Security Disability and was approved on 1st attempt. Since then, i have recommended it to several friends with various disability issues. I highly recommend it for anyone contemplating applying for Social Security Disability benefits.

I purchased this book to prepare to submit my ss disability application. I believe the facts ultimately are the deciding factor in approval. This book was very helpful in gathering and presenting my information. A good reference tool throughout the process.

This guide is comprehensive, easy to understand- but NO reason to buy a brand new one if you can get your hands on a used copy on Amazon for less than a few dollars.... its all googleable stuff. Also, I had one SSDI question that is still not answered- and this book does not answer it either! I am not a lawyer, but I do legal paperwork for people, I am a paperwork person... I can do a divorce, adoption, citizenship, so I thought this might help with ssdi.... its just as good as using google.

This book was a great help and worth the price. Much of the information is available on the Social Security Dept. website, but this is so much easier than trying to navigate a government site or call and spend hours on the phone. There are also tips in this book that I didn't find in any online sites.

Written by a disability lawyer this book provides informative, accurate information on the Social Security and SSI application and determination process. Useful for applicants in negotiating their way through the complex and often lengthy process that should lead to stable cash benefits and eventually Medicare or Medicaid insurance coverage to those who need it.
