I read Randall Wallace's The Touch on an airplane and it became kind of embarrassing because I found myself crying at a bunch of places in the story. The first time it happened, I tried to be cool in front of my fellow passengers ... a casual daub around the corners of the eyes, no problem. But the book kept moving me over and over, so that I finally just gave up and sat there blubbering like a Dad watching videos of his four-year-old kids doing black-flips into the backyard swimming pool.

To be serious though: what makes a book or a film so moving that it produces tears? It isn't because the story is sappy or lachrymose (that would produce the opposite reaction); it's because the characters are put in situations that require them to act with great honor or love, particularly in the face of adversity. Such moments are a staple of everything Mr. Wallace writes, as anyone who has seen Braveheart can attest. (By the way, check out Love and Honor, another terrific novel -- about Russia and Catherine the Great).

Mr. Wallace says that people often ask him why he writes war stories and he always answers that they're not war stories, they're love stories. "What do you love so much that you'd be willing to give your life for it?" Well, here in The Touch, Randall Wallace is writing a pure love story--the tale of a surgeon who loses his faith and regains it--and it is terrific precisely because of those moments of truth, of honor and of love that hit you in the heart and make you react with emotion. This is a four-handkerchief novel in the best sense of the term. Get it and read it. But be careful taking it on an airplane. I've warned you!

This is not your typical love story and is one of the best I have ever read. One thing that particularly intrigued me was this page turner was not predictable in many areas. Also, the author utilized proficient vocabulary that is not common in many works of fiction. I hope we see additional stories similar to this from Randall Wallace. As a librarian and avid reader, this is a title I will highly recommend.

"The Touch" by Randall Wallace was a very good read. Andrew Jones has it all. His life is perfect. His lady, Faith has accepted his proposal and he has "the touch." The rising neurosurgeon is acclaimed for his skill and his talents. But in an instant his abilities as a doctor are not enough. He fails. this begins the next chapter in Jones life. One of walls and fortresses to keep out the possibility of failure or pain. He doesn't trust himself and thus doesn't practice surgery again. He begins to teach and use his skills as a doctor to heal people in non-life threatening ways. The other main character in the story is Lara. She is driven to perfect the unknown, impossible brain surgery technique that takes her mothers life. She pursues Jones in an attempt to do what no other can do. The story line continues from there as each character is challenged to trust in himself and in someone higher, God. Will they use the talents, or "the touch" that God has given them, or will they let fear prevent them from doing what God has created them to do? I won't tell you. You'll have to read it to find out yourself.

A book you can't put down.
This was the first book I've read by Randall Wallce but won't be my last.
It takes you from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia to the city streets of Chicago with a lot of twist & turns along the way.
A young Dr. loses his fiancee in a car wreck & because he can't save her he gives up surgery till he meets a young woman who helps him face his fears & open his heart to love again and to give his hands to God so he can not only try to save her life but his own as well. The end will surprise you.
This is a book I will read again and highly recommend.

THE TOUCH is a totally satisfying novel on several levels. Randall Wallace obviously knows and loves the characters he created and draws the reader in to experience their sorrows and joys. The author brings to life the people who enhabit this world (I bet Mr. Wallace grew up around the mountain folks) and really make us, the readers, care what happens to them. He speaks of spirituality in a way that I connected to and personally need to hear how other people approach the subject of G-d. We see how Lara learns to give without wanting any credit or applause. The Jews call this a Mitsvah, giving for the sake of giving and if we speak of it or want credit, well, it invalidates the good deed all together. I couldn't put the book down and highly recommend it to anyone who wants a feel-good book to spend happy hours reading.

Format: Audio CD
This is an excellent audio all round. The story is very well crafted with characters you can believe in and a plot that is full of different emotions. This is not surprising coming from the man who wrote the screenplay for `Braveheart`!! The narration is perfect. Paul Michael does a wonderful job of bringing the different characters to life, and knows how to stir your emotions with the perfect pitch of his voice. Its not a fast paced audio but it will definitely keep your attention, if you like well developed characters with a medical setting. Thanks to christianaudio.com Reviewers Program for this copy.
