Please note that Tyndale House Publishers provided me with a complimentary copy of this book for review purposes. I received no monetary compensation, and the following review is completely honest, and entirely my opinion.

This review may contain spoilers.

I enjoyed the book All Right Here: 1 (The Darlings) by Carre Armstrong Gardner. There were many family members highlighted in the book, but Ivy and her husband, Nick, were the main characters. I could relate to Ivy and Nick, since I experienced infertility and the agony that accompanies it in the beginning of my marriage. I also went through the same feelings of guilt she did.

For the most part, I enjoyed the story line. The author is a great storyteller, and I liked the family, though I wasn’t familiar with them before this book. (I got the feeling there was a back story about this family that I missed out on, which made me want to read more about them. Because of this, I’m sure there are other books in this series that I’ve missed, and plan to check them out.)

I was quite surprised by the twist that explained Nick’s attitude and coldness toward Ivy. (I don’t want to give away too much information here.)

Unfortunately, I didn’t think the children’s behavior was entirely realistic. In my experience, even children who are extremely abused still want to be with the abuser. These kids seemed to be able to move right on without their mother, with no issues. In the same vein, I think each of the kids would have demonstrated many more behavior problems for Ivy and Nick than they did.

I also found the beginning half of the book to be written much better than the second. The first seemed to have more depth, while the end seemed to be thrown together without much thought put into it.

This was an interesting book.

The book didn't indicate that it is #1 in a series, but with "a Darling Family novel" as a subtitle, I certainly had the feeling it was IN a series. I wouldn't have guessed it was the first though, as I kept vaguely feeling like there was a back story I didn't know. Apparently not.

From the opening sentences, where Ivy is wrapping a birthday gift for her husband of six years knowing he is going to hate it, I was rolling my eyes at her. Seriously, you give him a book of poetry every year, he never cracks open the cover, and you eventually add it to "your" collection? And I was guessing this was going to be the central character. As she was.

The dynamics of Ivy and Nick's relationship are fairly complex, which I did like, and their relationships with their families are incredibly complex. The Darlings (Ivy's family) seem like a fairly friendly bunch, and they are generally supportive, though Nick avoids interacting with them. The Masons (Nick's family) treat Ivy horribly, though she certainly does her duty in showing up for functions and being polite.

Ivy can't have children, and she desperately wants them. And then they end up taking in the kids next door when they are abandoned by their mother. Nick is in agreement about this, even agreeing to attend foster parenting classes. But he keeps insisting these are not his kids. Ivy, of course, totally falls for the children and is referring to them as "mine" from pretty early on.

Most of the adults in this novel seem to be horribly self-centered. Nick and Ivy are very wrapped up in what they want, though the kids seem to break through some. Nick's sisters and mother are horrid.

All Right Here is a family drama about the Darling Family. Leander and Jane are the dad and mom to their five grown children: David, the twins Laura and Ivy, Sephy, and Amy. This particular book deals the most with Ivy and her husband Nick. Nick and Ivy have been married for 6 years and Ivy is unable to have children. Something she thought that she and Nick had overcome. Unfortunately, Nick has not let that go and their marriage has suffered through the years. When their new neighbor abandons her three children, she and Nick take the kids in for what at first was supposed to be a few nights. But as the search continues for the neglectful mother, Ivy opens her heart to the children who have not really had a very good life. DeShaun at 14 has always tried to shelter his little sister Jada who is 9 and his little brother Hammer who is 6. Nick feels it his Christian duty to help these children but he insists that they are not their kids. Under the foster care of both Nick and Ivy all three children bloom and find hidden talents. However, as the days turn into weeks and then months, Ivy realizes her marriage is not going to change and temptation looms on the horizon. When Nick notices Ivy has cooled in her love for him, he realizes that he just might lose her and the three children who ended up becoming more important to him than he thought they would.
Laura, Ivy’s twin, is the secondary story in this book. Her story also deals with some difficult subjects. This book is filled with real life problems and I did enjoy getting to know the Darling family. I really liked how they still had Thursday night dinners with almost the whole Darling clan and getting to peek in on their family celebrations. I enjoyed this author’s debut book and I look forward to reading more about the Darling family. I received the book from The Book Club Network (TBCN) and the opinions are my own.
