Each generation of believers faces a unique set of challenges. These challenges shape the church and present us with the question: how do we respond effectively and faithfully?

In Pressure Points: Twelve Global Issues Shaping the Face of the Church, missiologist J.D. Payne identifies and describes twelve of the most critical matters facing the church in the first half of this century. Our response is a matter of stewardship, and the stakes are high.

The twelve pressure points are:

1. Unreached People Groups -- At present, two billion people on earth have never heard the name of Jesus. there are still 6,426 people groups that remain unreached with the gospel.
2. The West as a Mission Field -- Within recent decades, the church in the West has been experiencing significant decline, while other religions have grown, as well as the number of those who claim to hold no religion.
3. Growth of the Majority World Church -- The largest numbers of followers of Christ live outside of the western countries.
4. Pluralism and the Plurality of Faiths -- The presence of other faith systems, and the view that there are many paths to God, present challenges to the Church's trust in the exclusivity of Christ, and our missionary practice.
5. International Migration -- At the moment, 3% of the world's peoples reside outside of their countries of birth. The majority of these peoples are moving to western countries and represent some of the world's unreached and least reached peoples.
6. Globalization -- Globalization has transformed travel and communication, and has transformed how people live throughout the world.
7. Poverty -- The separation between the "haves" and "have nots" is increasing.

Pressure can be an amazingly destructive force. When pressure builds up inside the earth's crust, it can result in a devastating earthquake. But pressure can also be beneficial. We would not have running water with it; neither would be able to enjoy the beauty of diamonds. Pressure, with its possibilities of benefit or destruction, is the metaphor at the heart of a new book by J.D. Payne.

Pressure Points lays out twelve of the global issues shaping the face of the church today, which is to say, twelve of the global issues that already are, and will continue to, impact the advancement of the gospel in the twenty-first century. Christians do not get to choose the issues that we must respond to or adapt to; however, we are able to choose how we will respond to them. Each of these issues represents a pressure point and with each point comes the possibility of success or failure, of responding well or responding poorly. Payne says, "While the church does not have control over the macro-level contextual issues of each generation, her response to them is a matter of kingdom stewardship."

While we have seen many books like this in the past--books that describe contemporary challenges to Christianity's advance--Pressure Points stands out in its positive tone. This is not a lament for what was or what should be. It is not a complaint about current realities. It is simply a realistic assessment of ways the world is changing and the new realities it presents. Payne believes the church's best days are ahead and that each of these pressure points represents a great opportunity for the gospel.

I found this book a little slow getting going but it was a great insight into what is needed today for the Church to reach the Unreached in the world today due to where people are moving and the changing cultures in the West. It really challenged me to look at the attitude of our church in Ameica

Global Christians face constant pressures as we serve in the Kingdom, but we often fail to understand the sources of these pressures clearly. J. D. Payne's book powerfully illustrates some of today's most urgent pressure points and challenges us to act boldly as we respond biblically. - Jon Hirst, President of GMI ([...]
