I really wanted to love these little books -- what a great idea for introducing babies to color! Unfortunately, I feel that they are just okay.

Pros:

1. The drawings: The drawings are eye-catching enough to keep the attention of my son (8 weeks old). I can also see him using these books to learn how to read when he gets a bit older.

2. The concept: Dedicating each book to a single color is a great way to introduce young eyes to color without confusion or overstimulation.

3. The colors: I am thrilled to have found a set of color books that introduce subtle variations in shade rather than displaying garish examples of only a few basic hues.

Cons:

1. The execution: The core concept of this series is that a single cutout functions as two different pictures, one on each side of the page turn. For example, the cherries on one page (three round holes cut out from the cardboard, with "cherry red" showing through from the color swatch on the following page) turn into pepperonis on the flip side. The effect is achieved with black and white drawings around the cutouts. Great, except that there are a couple of pages where the color label is showing through the cutout, completely ruining the effect and revealing a lack of basic care on the part of the publisher. How hard is it to move some words around on a page?

2. The color names and target items: Since these books are meant to introduce colors to small children, I found it a bit odd that so many of the color hues were assigned arbitrarily to objects that are not normally associated with any particular color (e.g. "soap orange"). Additionally, some of the color names do not match the accompanying picture (e.g. "chili pepper red" is used with a picture of a wagon).Read more ›

We totally love it. My boy learned his basic colors very fast and was bored with all the other color learning tools and books. He loves these little books. You get 6. Each for the basic colors and then variations inside. It was a great big hit Christmas morning. Highly recommended. Very small and compact, and the pages in the books are very thick and the kids have no problem turning them and they should last for a very long time. Excellent teaching tool.

Love Pantone! If you have a budding little designer, get these soon to be classic board books. The size is great for little hands to hold. I do wish some of the die cut holes in the covers somehow had a color behind them. If they redo them, keep this in mind. Maybe add a viewfinder one at the end where baby must look for the color? My favorite is the yellow umbrella that turns into a macaroni and cheese.

These are adorable! I have a friend whose last name was Pantone, so her baby just had to have these, but as a graphic designer myself, I kind of want them for my kids too! Six tiny books, one for each color, with simple drawings that match up to actual pantone color chips. The board books seem very durable, too.

I have read these to my son from the time he was one. He is three now and still wants to read these every night. :/ they have cutouts for the pictures and bright colors. They are wonderful. I buy them as gifts now. I highly recommend.

these little books are great to supplement the color studies we have been doing as we build our own color wheels (ages 3-6). As I get materials ready, the kids explore the books, they seem to love the shapes as much as the colors. Highly recommend!

These are good quality and maybe they will ultimately help my son learn his colors, but they seem fairly boring (the pictures are minimal at best) and they reference different shades of colors by number as if I bought my son a paint color wheel.
