Charlie Dixon was framed. A girl named Maria is seen being dropped off to a local hospital, high on LSD. Maria is admitted and things take a turn for the worse. As for Charlie, he knows it wasn’t him driving his car, or wearing that cap. But who wants to frame him for this? Meanwhile, school gets a little more interesting as his ex-girlfriend Bridget enlists his help to try to find a drive she left in the library. One that was stolen. But what was really on the drive? And can Charlie figure it out while trying to get his most recent girlfriend, Ellie, back? This is going to be one of Charlie Dixon’s most ridiculously crazy weeks. Hang on.

Now, I’m a fan of pulp fiction. I love a good Raymond Chandler story like the next one. So I was really excited to read High and Dry, the newest book by Sarah Skilton. I enjoyed Bruised, her debut, and am happy to say that High and Dry is clever, funny and pays great homage to the classic detective stories of our day.

Charlie is a pretty sad character when we first meet him. He’s drunk, pathetically so, and trying to get his girlfriend Ellie back, who dumped him for undisclosed reasons. As the plot thickens, Charlie goes further and further down the rabbit hole. I don’t want to give anything away so I’ll keep it vague. I really liked all the twists and turns the plot took. While I didn’t have a great sense of all of the characters, it didn’t bother me. The story is totally plot driven and as long as you know Ellie, Charlie and Bridget, then I think you’re okay.

The backstory is carefully laid out. I really liked all of the tension that is already in the air when the story begins. However it is a slow build. I liked the book okay for maybe the first half, and then the second half is when things start to get really interesting!

High and Dry is fun, easy to read and reminds me of some good crime noir with savory characters, hidden agendas and suspicious dames.

Try it out.

I enjoyed reading Sarah Skilton's new book, High and Dry. I fell in love with the characters, rooted for the the good guy, and couldn't wait to see what happens next. The twists and turns were cleverly written, making it hard to put the book down until the last page.

Though High and Dry is a different style from the author's first book, I think I loved it even more! The voice of Charlie, the MC, was amazing. He was flawed, but so lovable. The classic Noir style and humor made me smile, especially the fact that it was so cleverly woven into a modern day YA setting. The mystery was perfect, and I loved that the twists and turns were unexpected, while the author continued to move the story forward by revealing info I wasn't expecting to come out so quickly. It kept me reading and guessing. But my favorite part by far was still Charlie. Gotta love him! Can't wait to see what's next from the mind of Sarah Skilton!

High & Dry is a cool, dark book about poor choices and consequences. Charlie Dixon is a character with a wickedly funny sense of humor. He's a smart guy who makes some poor choices, but his intentions are good. While reading this fun mystery, I kept wondering who stole the flash drive and why. The author does an excellent job of creating a cast of characters packed with suspects. A great read.

HIGH AND DRY by Sarah Skilton leads readers through an incredibly fast-paced week in
the life of high school senior Charlie Dixon. Dixon, an athletic and likeable young man, finds
himself spiraling downhill after the girl he loves --- Ellie Chen --- breaks up with him.

In an effort to win Ellie back and win some cash, Charlie strikes a deal with his more-than-slightly untrustworthy neighbor, Bridget, and agrees to help her recover a flash drive that she claims stores an important college essay. However, as the week goes on, Charlie discovers that the flash drive contains much more valuable information than Bridget alluded to, and he finds himself tangled in a web of lies and buried history. One of Charlie’s classmates is hospitalized for an LSD overdose and Charlie is framed for it, and Charlie also has to contend with his long-time best friend Ryder’s mysterious situation, decide whether or not to throw a major soccer game and figure out what to do after high school. To add further complications to Charlie's situation, his high school seems to be unusually segregated into leagues, to the extent that students cannot speak to a person in another clique unless the group leader deems it acceptable. Charlie is in the middle of an elaborate social scheme, and all of the societal loops he must jump through make it laborious for him to gather information about the flash drive he is trying to locate.

The plot of HIGH AND DRY is extremely layered, which generates the reader's interest but can also become a bit confusing. Sarah Skilton chose to unravel all of the story's events in one week, which is why her novel can be hard to follow: she wrote a book with constant motion.
