Product Description

Green living begins at home, and New Green Home Solutions tells you how. Most of the energy-derived pollution we produce comes as a direct result of our homes - how we heat them, how we cool them, how we keep them well-lit and full of things that make our lives so comfortable. The good news is that we have tremendous power to create change. Renewable energy design, better insulation and more efficient appliances could reduce energy demands by 60 to 80 percent. By embracing conservation and renewable energy, we can win our energy independence and help save the planet.
Dave Bonta, president and founder of USA Solar Stores, the largest alternative energy retailer in the Northeast, has written about alternative energy and sustainable living for Green Living, Back Home Magazine, Alternative Energy Retailer and The Vermont Guardian. Bonta has studied renewable energy and energy efficiency for more than twenty years, is a frequent speaker at major green energy conferences across America and is a tireless advocate for green living. Also president of BioQuantum, Inc., a bio-fuels company, Bonta is the creator of BackHome chapters in America and is president of a renewable energy community organization, The Sustainable Valley Group.
Stephen Snyder, communications director for USA Solar Stores, left New York City in 1995 to start an organic herb farm in Vermont with his wife, Melissa. He holds a degree in radio, television and motion picture communications from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has broad experience in communications, public affairs, and media relations. He also works as a freelance writer and has published The Brewmaster's Bible (HarperCollins), The Beer Companion (Simon & Schuster) and The Brewmaster's Recipe Manual.

From the Inside Flap

"What's the use of a fine house if you haven't got a tolerable planet to put it on?" - Henry David Thoreau
Today's sophisticated and technologically savvy generation faces even greater challenges with rescuing the environment and leaving a better world - and a better life - for those to follow. Green living begins at home. Most of the energy-derived pollution we produce comes as a direct result of our homes - how we heat them, how we cool them, how we keep them well lit and full of things that make our lives so comfortable. The good news is that we have tremendous power right in our own hands to create change. Renewable energy design, better insulation, and more efficient appliances could reduce energy demands by 60 to 80 percent. By embracing conservation and renewable energy, we can win our energy independence and help save the planet. If everyone began conserving today, we would see immediate results. Be a part of the green-living movement and discover the possibilities for home energy as part of a new whole-home strategy for living green.
"The days of building cookie-cutter McMansions are over, and the era of thinking about the real cost of a house has begun. And this is the guide to doing it with enormous elegance, real frugality, and a commitment to the health of the world beyond your walls." -Bill McKibben, author of Deep Economy

5.0 out of 5 stars A bright, appealing 'must' for any library serious about renewable resources, May 17, 2009
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
NEW GREEN HOME SOLUTIONS: RENEWABLE HOUSEHOLD ENERGY AND SUSTAINABLE LIVING is a top pick for any library catering to either homeowners or architect/builders. It packs in 'green' ideas and solutions for both existing and new structures, with color photos supplementing ideas for solar space heating, wind power, passive heating and cooling systems, and more. A bright, appealing 'must' for any library serious about renewable resources.

5.0 out of 5 stars Handsome Book for Green Home Buyers, September 12, 2009
If you're like most people (especially those new or newish to ecohomes) you may wonder, if only subconsciously, that green homes have to be drab or boring looking. After all, healthy food doesn't taste as good as treats loaded with sugar and fat and safe cars tend to be boxy and unsexy. Well, New Green Home Solutions helps put the notion that green = dull to rest. It's filled with lots of high quality photos showing handsome ecofriendly homes. There is also advice among the photos, but you shouldn't buy this as a how-to book. But more for ideas: the big thesis being that you can create a house that feels as good to live in as it is good for the environment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Renewable 101, July 15, 2009
By Lam F. Wong (East Coast, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is very easy to read and the pictures are outstanding. Many of the ideas presented in this book are viable and practical now especially with various incentives from the state and federal levels. I am personally planning for a PV system and greenhouse for vegetable gardening, and will check out the resources provided in the book.
