MOBY DICK: A BABLIT OCEAN PRIMER is a board book for babies, toddlers, and young children that incorporates elements of Herman Melville’s novel MOBY DICK into it. Originally, I found the concept of the BabyLit books was an interesting one. After reading a few of them, it became apparent that the concept didn’t really matter all that much because these primer books really weren’t all that indistinguishable from other primer books on the same subjects (colors, numbers, opposites, etc.). MOBY DICK: A BABYLIT OCEAN PRIMER is the best book in the BabyLit series I have examined. Don’t expect this to be a children’s version of the Moby Dick story. Instead, this is an “ocean primer” and the book introduces youngsters to things found in the ocean (and the story MOBY DICK). The basic set-up of the book is that an element, object, or concept is introduced. These objects take up two whole pages. In addition, on the rest of the page are examples of the object or thing mentioned. In addition, some pages have a short quote from the novel or a question. The objects discussed are sailors, ship, gulls, captain, waves, fish, anchor, harpoons, whale, and stars. As an ocean “primer” MOBY DICK: A BABLIT OCEAN PRIMER works rather well. Just don’t expect to find a condensed version of the novel.

Gibbs Smith is a small company which makes use of classic literature to produce current board books and other products that celebrate some of history's finest writing. Each of the board books takes a classic work of literature and focuses on one educational element which it uses words, concepts, and themes from the classic story to teach.

In Moby Dick's OCEAN PRIMER, the concept of marine life is explored in terms of ocean and whaling. These board books are quite short, like a typical board book, with one or few words per page, and lovely graphic illustrations which visually interpret the word presented. The color palette and art style are delightful in all books in this series, and Moby Dick is no exception.

The entire series is a wonderful addition to the collection a parent would build for any young child. I recommend the entire series for picture recognition and corresponding letter and/or word association. The images are just plain fun, and would appeal to any child's imagination. Also recommended to older readers who love the classics.....it's a lovely, light-hearted addition to my classic literature shelf!

Check out "Baby Lit" to see the many fine titles produced in this board book series; my favorites are Pride & Prejudice and Sense & Sensibility.

When I was pregnant, I saw a few of these books on Amazon and fell in love with the idea of having classics-inspired primers for my daughter. I bought up a handful of them and they sat on the shelf waiting for her. She didn't really get into them until she was about 9 months but she loves them and Moby-Dick is her favorite. It's a cute little vocabulary book that is very simplistic. I notice a lot of reviews on here say that their 2 year-olds are bored by them and I can understand that as they are very simple books, both in words and pictures. However, mine is just over a year now and these books are perfect for her! I also get the giggles every time I see her reading them!

I was disappointed with all of the baby lit books. I was hoping for a baby version of the classic plots, but they're essentially just random words related to the books. Not a book I could ready twenty times in a day, which I suppose is okay because my toddler would never WANT me to read it twenty times in a day. Very telling.

Loved the concept of the book "a classic"-- Having many books in the house and reading extensively my wife and I thought it'd be fun to get a few classical children novels. While evidently they weren't going to fit in all important chapters "Eye of the Whale" etc. They could have flushed out a simple story. What this book did was single words accompanied by a picture. "Anchor" followed by a large anchor, "harpoon, ship" etc. It was rather misleading. The characters and pictures were good and adapted well. The concept was overall convincing enough to buy but the execution of it was poor. I checked out a few of the other "classical" books that were in the line, all were basically the same thing. Jane Eire consisted of "trunks" and other items along with pictures. If you had read the novels you'd be able to see what they are trying to convey but without knowledge of it before hand or a child without knowledge before hand it falls rather on deaf ears.

Baby lit books are our all time favorite books! They are small books, but that does not underestimate the goodness inside. We have ordered just about all of the baby lit books and love to swap them out during seasons and holidays. I also love that they have different primers and different types of learning for your little one. These books are great gift ideas, there are a lot of genres to choose from. The artwork and colors are bright and vivid, very pleasant to look at. The mommy and the teacher in me loves and approves these books!

This was a present for my 1 year old niece. I and both her parents have degrees in English, and I want her to start loving books early. So I purchased this and two other BabyLit books with that hope. She loves them!! They are cute, educational on her level, and even her parents love them. Hopefully she will remember "reading" these classics and be engaged in the full versions in high school and college.
