My second graders love this Face to Face series (particularly the newest Frog one). It is written at a level appropriate for them (something the previous reader didn't seem to notice -- the target audience is young elementary children, not adults). The photographs are gorgeous and really capture the kids' attention. Since our class subscribes to NG Young Explorers magazine, they were familiar with the style of writing and layout.
Good resources for where to get more info at end of book.

My wildlife-obsessed ten-year-old loved this book! The information is thorough and well-written, and the photography is beautiful! I highly recommend this book for upper-elementary or middle school kids who love big cats, African wildlife, or animals in general.

Also, I'd like to respectfully point out that Amazon's book review does recommend this book for grades 4-8, and that it is clearly marked as 32 pages. Please don't give a great book a bad review just because you didn't read the description carefully--it's unfair to the authors and to potential customers.

If you took a poll and asked kids if they'd like to have a lion cub as a pet, probably most of them would say yes, but it's out of the question because lions are dangerous! Beverly and Dereck Joubert could attest to that. They've spent a long time photographing, studying them and "trying to steer clear of their teeth." One time they thought they were going to be lunch when a male charged them. It was quite a scare, but they stood their ground and got a good look at those fangs.

In this book you will learn many interesting facts about lions (scientifically known as Panthera Leo), some you may take pride in already knowing, others you might say, "Wow, I didn't know that!" Did you know that "females seem to prefer males with darker, longer manes?" Did you know that when someone shoots a male lion as many as thirty other lions can die? You'll learn these and many other odd facts like how to keep a lion from eating you up, how to live with them, how to track them and an assortment other "wow" facts.

The photography in the book is wild, free and the story is captivating. This is the perfect book for the animal lover to immerse himself in. In the back of the book there are suggestions as to how kids can help in conservation efforts, a "Facts at A Glance" section, a glossary, index and recommended book, article and web sites. Did you know that the skinny, ugly old hyena can scare a lion? Wow!

I bought this to go along with my boys unit study on safari animals. It's a great book, absolutely full of information and written in an interesting way. My boys are 5 and 7 and while they enjoyed it, I skipped around a bit and only read parts of it to them. It's very wordy and a lot of it was a little too much for them right now. They did enjoy the book though. The pictures are real photos of lions and not drawings so that was a big draw for them (and me!) and there were plenty of little short paragraphs and captions that captured their interest for this school year. It will be an excellent book to revisit in a few years to do a more in-depth study of the subject.

A literary abomination, unprecedented of its kind. A terror to the eye, like no other narrative ever written by human hand. An unintelligible word creation, void of any qualitative form or content. It is probably safe to say, that whoever birthed this hellish piece of garbage was under the heavy influence of narcotics during the whole writing process, then handed in the manuscript to an equally blasted publisher, who in turn managed to convince a drunk sponsor to waste funds on its eventual publication; otherwise I see no plausible explanation that would justify the existence of this bookish fecal matter.
These and other sinister thoughts crossed my mind when I first read James Joyce's "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" as part of a school assignment. Mind you, I was quite young, and my reading comprehension skills rather amateur-esque.
This book about lions, however, was a pretty fun read! Four out of five.
