Harold Bell Wright may have published "The Eyes of the Word in 1915, but its message is directly applicable to today. Behind the captivating saga of a portrait painter romancing a violinist under the scrutiny of his famous novelist yokefellow, a renowned media critic, and mismatched promiscuous art patrons is a morality play that is just as timely as it was a nearly a hundred years ago.
The narrative repeatedly laments the success bestowed upon much so called "art" that debauches that title. Conrad LaGrange, the celebrated author, begrudgingly iterates that his wealth and esteem have been acquired by accentuating the profane and sacrificing the nobility of his profession. Reading of such a contretemps, it is hard not to ponder the likes of Madonna, Howard Stern, Roseanne Barr and host of other modern icons who've built their careers on the meretricious rather than the meritorious.
As usual Harold Bell Wright displays his masterful command of the written word. Few other authors can match him when it comes to unfolding action in a manner that engages the reader from the first sentence to the satisfying conclusion

I've read this book at least 15 times and everytime I read it I'm amazed at how much I learn and how different the message seems to me each time I read it. The message is so perfect for today that you hardly believe it was written so long ago. If I could give one to everyone in the world I would, the message, the writing, the underlying depth of this life changing book is truly magnifiscent! Read this book, and maybe it will touch your life as it has mine!

Keep your highlighter handy. Harold Bell Wrights’s books, including “Eyes of the World” are filled with intelligently written points of wisdom to which you will want to refer. These are not merely ‘religious’ books, but are well written novels that will hold your attention. His subjects are all anchored on a knowledgeable patron with much experience and wisdom; a Pollyanna or two; some evil arch-villains and their surrounding ilk; and a young hero. But they are not melodramatic. His cliffhangers can be several chapters of breathlessness.
HBW wrote about the things he knew well; art, mountains and people. His attention to detail can tend to be a bit long. As a preacher, his novels always contain a bit of moral teaching. Don’t let that throw you. HBW is a highly accomplished author, and his writings well worth keeping on the book shelf.

You can tell this was written almost 100 years ago, and yet the story has meaning for today. Except that today's writers don't seem to write the philosophical way this is written. Lovely description scenes.

This is a book I found through Kindle and was fascinated by the high review recommendations. I gave it a 4, debating a 5, because I found the early part of the book slow reading and a bit tedious, but not so much that I lost interest. Momentum did increase and rather rapid like a snowball down a mountain at the end. It is an older style of writing, which may account for that. As someone who lives in Southern California and knows of the mountain ranges, I felt fascinated by the wonderful descriptions of the mountains and towns as they exhisted in the past. There is a good plot which balances an artist young man, who meets an innocent girl playing a mystical violin that inspires the artistic talent of the artist complicated by a nasty character who vies for her affections. After a rollercoaster of events of cliff hanging style, the hero saves the heroine and all ends well with the good people staying true to their goodness. It was a joyful ending and a feel good book that will make you glad you read it. I have already ordered another of his books.

This story is old fashioned as are its characters, the good ones and the bad. Its themes of life and love are folded artfully, yet without artistry, into as engaging a story as any I have ever been told or ever read.

This book needs to be read by everyone. It is so well written and carries such a timeless message that is still relevant today. Character does matter; the love of money and power is the root of all sorts of evil. Man looks on the outside but God sees the heart.

Great book! It will not be a waste of your time to read it! It has a good moral lesson to it and points out the hazards of our society today. Including our own inner life and how we view things.
