Product Description

The peregrine falcons of Morro Rock, located along the coast of Central California, have been admired and observed by travelers and visitors from around the world, and is one of the most well-known peregrine falcon nesting sites in North America. This 40-year history chronicles the yearly efforts of nest site attendants and endangered species management techniques - captive breeding, double clutching, captive hatching of thin, fragile wild eggs, and fostering falcon chicks into the wild nests - that has assisted in the recovery of a once imperiled species. 44 pages, with color and black and white photographs.

5.0 out of 5 stars A unique and valuable contribution to the understanding of the magnificent Peregrine Falcon, May 18, 2008
Steve Schubert's "The Peregrine Falcons of Morro Rock - A 40-year History - 1967 - 2007" is a unique and valuable contribution to the understanding of the magnificent Peregrine Falcon. Morro Bay, CA has a dedicated, some might say obsessive, subculture of admirers and Peregrine Falcon enthusiasts. Every day one can see people checking out the "south" and the "east" nests or aeries on Morro Rock in Morro Bay, CA. It brings to mind "Pale Male" the now worldwide known Red-tailed hawk in New York. Several Yahoo! Groups and websites are dedicated to reporting on just the Peregrine Falcons of Morro Rock at Morro Bay, CA, that Steve reports on. Steve Schubert is easily recognized as the area's most expert and involved individual in the recovery, preservation, conservation, study, and understanding of these unique and captivating raptors. Years of research, observations, and photographic documentation are included in this comprehensive document. Steve had earlier published locally some interim studies, but this is the first comprehensive, up-to-date, book on the subject finally widely available to the layman and scientist worldwide. Steve works outdoors with kids at Camp KEEP (Kern Environmental Education Program) in California's Montaña de Oro State Park, where he has for many years now instilled the love of nature and fascination with hands-on nature observation that is clearly reflected in this work. Spend a few hours reading this book, and explore the exciting history and current status of Morro Rock's Peregrine Falcons with this expert who loves his work - you will not be disappointed.
