This is a pretty good book that tells you about all the features of the camera that you may or may not otherwise figure out quickly if this is you first DSLR. In addition to the camera itself and its features, the book also has useful chapters on lens selection, flash photography, and software options. The book does include some cute tidbits, such as on how to "remove people" using long exposures (p. 196), provided that conditions are appropriate. So, as a guide to how to use the camera it is a pretty solid book and you will likely not be disappointed.

That said the book also has some annoying features. Mr. Busch: I have bought the book. You don't need to repeatedly justify why you wrote it - I am sure it is far better than anything else written on the D3100 camera. In addition, at some 400 pages it is too long. The author has a pretty long-winded way of writing about marginally relevant stuff, with lots of intros and parenthetical remarks, as well as flashbacks to the days of film. An example that combines it all, from the introduction to autofocus mode options (p.185): "When I first started shooting sports with an autofocus SLR (back in the film camera days), I covered one game alternating between shots of base runners and outfielders with pictures of a promising young pitcher, all from a position next to the third base dugout." ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. I suppose it is a personal thing. Many people may not mind this style, personally I would prefer the writing to be more concise and to the point.

I purchased this book after 2 weeks I got my D3100. I am beginner to DSLR family so was excited about it. Manual which comes with camera is just to give you over view of the product so I will definitely recommend this book. This book is written in simple layman terms so that even beginner like me can also understand the terms. There are few things which are really basics and if you are reading after already spent some time on your DSLR you can skip some of the things which is also mentioned what to skip and when.
It will surely helpful to start with and clear your fundamentals about the photography. It will also tells you about the each and every function of the camera in detail so that you can really enhance your skills and take beautiful pictures the way you want. You will be surprised with your picture taking ability after reading the book and applied it while taking pictures. Since this book is written on specific model you can understand quiet easily while keeping your camera in one hand and simultaneously experimenting with it.
Overall its worth spending money ............

The Nikon D3100 is my first DSLR camera. At first all of the buttons and gizmos were intimidating. This book explains what everything is and does. Even better than that it helps me understand why I should use certain settings and functions.
This is a high quality book with many full color pictures and examples. Probably the best part is that is specifically for the Nikon D3100. Not a generic type of instructional book.
I highly recommend this if you have a Nikon D3100.

I purchased a D3100 2 months ago. Wanting the most out of my equipment, I scoured the bookstores and Amazon for the "RIGHT" guide for some time. When I saw the David Busch guides I knew my search had been worthwhile and ordered both the Compact and Full version prior to release. I have not been disappointed. This easy to follow, comprehensive guide has been a great learning tool for me as I explore the capabilities of my camera. It is by far the best D3100 guide on the market. Special Thanks to David Busch!

What a wonderful resource . My camera came with hardly any info and the on camera guide isn't very convenient to learning. This guide is great, lots of pictures and illustrations. The book is laid out logically and explains digital photography which I am just learning. It's big and easy to read, glossy pages. Highly recommend to anyone who buys a Nikon D3100. Nikon could learn a thing or two about what a user manual should look like.

David Busch's ability to describe, step-by-step every option that a camera has to offer and then to teach how to apply it to anyone's ability level is astounding! I bought this book for my son-in-law since I had purchased David's book on my Canon Rebel T2i and I learned so much more than the Canon guide. I have been taking photos for 40 years, and David, not only offers beginners the ability to utilize every function of their camera, but also give new ideas to us 'old timers' from the 35mm times, is amazing. Even though I thought I was pretty techno savy, David showed me things I would have never found otherwise. EVERY DSLR OWNER NEEDS TO HAVE DAVID BUSCH'S BOOK ON THEIR CAMERA TO UTILIZE IT TO THE MAXIMUM!!!

I came late to the D3100 since I found a good price on a closeout. It's a nice supplement to the camera's owner's manual and reference guide. I used to own SLRs back in pre-digital days. I still haven't learned everything there is to know about the D3100 but find it easy to get my questions answered in this book as they come up. I have found a couple of references to the D3000 that weren't updated in this book for the D3100. But overall, a useful book.
