I appreciate what the book is trying to do and feel that there is a wealth of knowledge within it. I also feel, however, that the quality and accuracy of that knowledge is brought into question due to contradictions caused by either poor editing or simple mistakes. I think the book could benefit from the authors and editors going back through the entire book and reediting it. First, I have to say the book is poorly organized overall. It uses boxes throughout the book to define and explain certain concepts, but they are placed in areas that don't make sense. For example, the text itself discusses using shock probation in parts of the first two chapters, yet the box explaining what shock probation is doesn't appear until the end of the second chapter. Prior to that box, the text never defines shock probation even though it points out its use as a community correctional program. This is just one small example, but this phenomenon occurs quite often throughout the book. The boxes also show up in the middle of a discussion about a completely different topic such as when they define what a fine is in a box on a page that discusses electronic monitoring and house arrest when fines were discussed several pages prior. Many of the boxes are also repeated in several chapters (especially the boxes explaining what a jail is and what a prison is). There are also a number of grammatical errors within the text, though none that significantly impact the understanding of the material.

The biggest problem I had with the book, however, was that it contradicts itself a number of times.

Required textbook for my Community Corrections course at Arizona State Univ. Bought used and saved a TON of money, which is always a good thing! As my title says, it's well-written and didn't put me to sleep like most textbooks, and it contained a lot of good information.

The book arrived quickly and in the described condition. I will be using it for a new class--this text is comprehensive on the subject of community corrections.
