Reason for Reading: Various reasons really. First of all I have an interest in serial killers. Secondly, I was intrigued by Tony Ciaglia's brain injury and what led him to write to serial killers and finally I enjoy books that contains letters.

This book is not for the squeamish. It contains brutal letters from serial killers describing their crimes in graphic detail. Without having read the book, one will first wonder what purpose this serves. Is it gratuitous and voyeuristic or does it serve some higher purpose? It is completely possible to read the book and skip the letters that describe murders, not all the letters do. What the letters do though, all of them, is let one inside the mind of a serial killer in a way that the public has never seen before. When serial killers posture for interviews or psychologists they are performing for an audience and act and behave in certain ways that these narcissistic people need to do so. But with Tony Ciaglia, he was/is able to get to the real person inside these monsters, most of them are still monsters on the inside, but Tony got their defenses down, treated them non-judgementally as people and they responded in kind, treating Tony as a "best friend".

The first part of the book deals with Tony's teenage accident which caused Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) from which he was never expected to recover. Recover he did though and we are taken through the journey of his recovery and the effect this had on his family and the after effects that defined the "new" Tony. A more child-like person, but with sudden violent rages. With much psychological work and the right medications, Tony is leading a relatively normal life today. I found this part of the book fascinating.

Very interesting TRUE story about a teen boy who has a dreadful accident in which he sustains a traumatic brain injury and ends up corresponding with serial killers in prison. He ultimately gains their trust and gleans information regarding unsolved, cold cases they have committed then works with law enforcement agencies to close them and provide closure for victim's families.

Truly a powerful story of perseverance, faith and the ability of one seemingly insignificant person's ability to play an integral and supportive role in such a vast number of unsuspecting people lives.

What a wonderful book. Not because it glorifies the lives of serial killers, but that it shows the inner life details of how an accident victim survives after a traumatic brian injury, and heals with the help of his family, dedicated doctors, and his own determination. The book shows us all the importance of family, and how important love from that bond truely is the best medicine. It especially shows how a brain trama victim fought for his life each and everyday, and the painfull reality, and at times lonely fight, to make a new life. The accident changed Tony Ciaglia's life, but it sure changed the lives of his parents and his brother Joey. They wanted their little boy, and big brother back, but learned to adapt to a new son, and a new brother. On the outside he looked fine. He survived thank God, but the brain trauma took away alot of his past life, and made his future so much different. Tony literally and physically lost his former identity. He not only died 3 times on the way to the hospital, but he lost his former self identity, his "best" friends, and his health. It's hard to imagine a young man who had life by its horns at the young age of 15, suddenly have to relearn how to talk, to think, and to live. His new life revolved around mental and phyical therapy treatments. Soon massive amounts of medinices kept his emotions in check, allowing his body to function, but also limited the quality of his life.

Then a new idea to occupy his time led to a new purpose. Writting serial killers didn't seem purposeful at first. Hearing the horror stories about the inhuman treatment these monsters treated their victims sure hit you in the gut, but could Tony find a purpose in all of that?

I do not know what direction to go in with this book. There were two main themes, traumatic brain injury and shock and awe of convicted serial killers looking for yet another 15 minutes of fame. The insight into the world of Tony Ciaglia, after he sustained a near fatal blow to the head by a Wave Runner while a 15-year-old teen at a summer camp was fascinating. How the brain compensates and rebels after an injury is what initially drew me into the book, but once the story fell into the black pit of yet another serial killer getting off on telling his story and justifying his actions I lost interest.

If you have read about one serial killer, you have pretty much read about them all. It is never their fault, society does not understand them, and if the victim were not in the wrong place at the wrong time doing the wrong thing then they never would have been singled out. Yada Yada Yada.

Back to Tony, because this is what the real story should have been about. After the injury, Tony fell into a deep depression and was unable to fit into the life he had before, if he was going to mentally survive this new hand that was dealt to him he have to find a purpose . Turns out that the purpose was both obsessive and terrifying at the same time.

Becoming pen pals with death row inmates is not what a parent would want for a child, but with Tony's injury, he had lost the usual shock and disgust that others feel towards killers. With this ability, he was able to correspond with them in a nonjudgmental way that allowed these men to both open up and confess to crimes that investigators needed answers to.

You will need a strong stomach to get through some of these letters. This is not a book for anyone that is sensitive to this subject matter.
