love, love, love lisa kleypas books . so i was shocked that she could write a book this bad.
i like light and fluffy as opposed to angsty romances but this was so light it was invisable. there's no dramatic tension between the h and h. lisa fills more page space talking about Avery's (the heroine's)catering skills than she does with dialogue between the h and h. in fact the hero ( Joe Travis) barely makes an appearance for almost half the book. The heroine isn't very likable either. She has reason to be reluctant about romance but her whining seems to prevent her from displaying any likable personality traits.
there are lots of secondary characters floating around such as ... The hero's family from the first novels... While it's nice to see a few of my favorite characters from the past, they take up to much space here . (why does a Travis always have a medical emergency? Lisa used that trope in two other books in the series and instead of creating suspense it was just tedious . the hero' s emotional connection to the sick character, although a sibling , is superficially established so it feels like an "everything but the kitchen sink" plotline
There's also a secondary romance, which is unusual for Kleypas books, (though this romance is marginally more interesting than the primary one!)
The only reason I give Brown Eyed Girl two stars is because Lisa still knows how to construct a sentence. Her writing style is excellent. And so are the sex scenes. Lisa's sex scenes are steamier than those found in erotic romance!

I'm hoping Brown Eyed Girl is an aberration and lisa' s back in form for her next novel.. An historical romance.. I hate to think that Lisa's best days writing romance are gone.. What a drag that would be for romance fans!

Lisa Kleypas is hands down my favorite author, but this book was probably one of the worst books I have ever read by any author. The price made me hesitate but being that it was Lisa Kleypas I just went ahead and bit the bullet. Her stories in the past were so good that $13.00 would have been well worth it. However, I am so supremely disappointed in this book, *especially* for this ridiculous price. This should have been $0.99. It is so boring and phoned in that I had to force myself to finish it. The first 3 books are one of my favorite series of all time and we had to wait YEARS for Joe's story. There was so much potential there, none of it was reached for this book. She had so much material to go on going into this book. Avery is merely tolerable and Joe BARELY even makes an appearance in the book. When he is hes just kinda standing there like a prop. What WAS there to like about Avery, exactly? She was large by her description, she wore frumpy and unstylish clothing, she had no personality outside of her issues to speak of.... Why DID Joe, who from past books you can tell was very likable and a total catch, see in her? Absolutely zero chemistry between the two characters. Their sex life seemed that of a 20 year married couple and in no way was written in the style I've come to love in a LK book. You are just supposed to kinda buy that there is chemistry between them with no proof of life. Even the love scenes, which Lisa usually is liberal about, went unfinished. You are in the middle of their lovemaking....then it's later that day....uhhh, what just happened here? Usually her sex scenes are steamy and romantic. The story is more about her event planning business than the actual "relationship" they were apparently developing. A wet rag has more warmth than their interactions.Read more ›

As with many other reviewers I was disappointed in the final Travis offering in the series. Joe has been just about my favorite Travis from the peeks Kleypas gave of him in the other books. Joe Travis in my opinion, is a multilayered man who has seen and done so much, yet in this book he was basically reduced to a simplistic character who was in pursuit of his "love." We don't really find out much about him that we didn't already know from the other offerings. Avery Crosslin is a wedding planner who has a past that includes betrayal by her mother, father and being jilted before her wedding. Trust issues. Both of these characters are strong individuals, but Kleypas (again my opinion) failed to provide any excitement in the book. Any conflict except for the most shallow--mainly Avery overcoming her trust issues. And most importantly in a romance novel--there didn't seem to be a lot of chemistry between the two. Yes they fell into bed the first time they met, but the writer didn't convincingly portray the chemistry so as to make it believable. I also didn't care for the ending. Don't want to put any spoilers in, but Avery had been working towards something for most of her career and Joe basically refuses to compromise on an issue. I guess after Kleypas portrayed Avery as so insecure to believe she could be loved, Joe not compromising at the end would have been a big nail in the romance coffin for her. This final book could have blown the series out of the water if the author had put some real effort into it, but alas, she did not. Sorry Lisa Kleypas--it really pains me to write that.

Blue-eyed Devil remains one of my favorite romance novels ever, but I won't be rereading this one!
