I'm seeing a lot of 5 star reviews here... I find that just a wee bit baffling.

I would give every single one of the other books a 5-star rating - but not this one. This one gets a 3.

It feels like it was little more than an administrative update... here's what's happening with our intrepid heroes between the real battles. Here's where they mop up some of the left over threads from previous ones, and weave a few threads for the next book.

In short, I think this should have been a Part 1 of a more complete book, or maybe Part 1 and Part 2... so lets say 2/3 of a book. Yes, I realize it is for YA. Yes, I realize the idea is to make it short enough that they will read it.... however, if Harry Potter proved one thing - YA WILL READ LONG BOOKS. An author need not write a short novel just for the sake of YA, unless they REALLY want to - or want to sell TWO books at $12 each instead just one book for $15 or $20. I was disappointed.

I will, of course, read and hungrily await the next installment. I am just quite disappointed that this is ALL I am getting until then.

The book builds suspense and connects you to the series. The characters gain traction with the plot. There is not enough action. There is not a climax, but a couple of satisfying surprises. The story and intrigue kept me reading. The story is too short. The relationship with Taylor is cute but the bed time is not necessary, especially for hormonal youth readers. Less romance and MORE FIGHTING!!

I'm a huge fan, and it wasn't good. It wasn't bad either it just wasn't a book. There was no plot, no climax no "storm of lighting". It feels like half a book. Honestly felt a little betrayed by the book, like it was rushed, not ready. You get lots of good background info and then... it ends. I look forward to the next book but only because I didn't get one this year.

Although the reader is fiercely curious as to what happened to Michael's mom, this book is not as thoroughly gripping as the previous four novels in the Michael Vey series. The title of "Storm of Lightning" betrays how the novel is actually setting up the scenario for anticipated battles in "Michael Vey 6". Not a lot of fist-pumping. It feels like a lot of background information is given, especially on how exactly Dr. Hatch takes over a country. If just simply enjoy reading, this novel can meet your needs. If your seeking a thrilling adventure where the Electroclan kicks butt, tread lightly.

When you finish the book, you are left with these questions:
-"OMG, WHO is the voice??"
-"Are the Electroclan up for the challenge of the next rescue mission?... Will they succeed?... Will the prisoners truly ally themselves with the Electroclan?"

The Negative:
VERY LITTLE ACTION
The heroes and villains don't even see each other, let alone fight...
This book seemed more about the enemy than our good guys.
Almost no new character developments or depth except for hatches team.
Several of the heroes like Abigail, McKenna, and jack (to name just a few) are barely in the entire book.
Lacks a real purpose as a standalone book and has minimal suspense.
Lame cliff hangers (especially since many of us can guess who the guy at the end is)
By far the least enjoyable of the series.

The Positives:
The story moves at a good pace despite No big changes for the clan. So ya don't feel like it drags on.
Definitely sets things up for an epic fight in the next book, since none happen here.
Answers sm questions regarding the last books cliff hangers.
Gives more insight on the enemy actions and how they feel about one another.
More details on hatches specific plans for world domination.
Characters reunions.
Ends on both a positive and cryptic note.
Brief revealing of a new characters.

It was a long and impatient year waiting for the anticipated release of Michael Vey: Storm of Lightning, the fifth installment in Richard Paul Evans’ amazing Michael Vey series. This book did not disappoint. Book four “The Hunt for Jade Dragon”, left readers with unrelenting curiosity.

What would the Electroclan find when they returned home to the U.S.?
Would Admiral-General Hatch continue his merciless march to rule the world’s electricity?
Where would the next journey take the Electroclan?
Who the heck IS “The Voice”?

Some of these are answered in this next fun and exciting chapter of the Michael Vey saga with a few surprises along the way.
Once again, Richard Paul Evans amazing imagination creates a riveting story that continues to engage readers of any age. His use of startling details, real world geography and challenging vocabulary along with interwoven tidbits of history and insights make all of the books in this MV series impossible to put down. The hardest part of reading them is the wait for the next one! I highly recommend this book to everyone! Zappy Reading!!

A Review of Michael Vey 5: Storm of Lightning
The book picks up right after the last (4 of 7), with Michael Vey and the Electroclan on the run after the Eglen find their safe house and destroy every trace of it. They then high-tail it to Mexico to find another safe haven. Meanwhile, Taylor’s mother has been arrested on heroin charges, in correlation with her finding and aiding the Electroclan in their quest to destroy the Eglen and prevent any world domination schemes they have up their sleeves. We are also reintroduced to the electric children who side with Hatch and see their relationship decay into one of mistrust and sabotage.
The story overall is rather good as a continuation of the series. I enjoyed the Mrs. Ridley subplot, as it shows just how far Hatch will go to get the children. The characters are as fresh as they’ve been previously, with new characters stories unfolding, and old ones arcing to new heights with character development. The scenario they are in is somewhat realistic, but the characters are like real people. When I read a book, I try to imagine it cinematically, and if it is good I can see it. This book would work really well as a film, or even a TV show. When I say the scenario is somewhat realistic, this included the setting. It ranges from large size Idaho town (comparable to a normal small town in any other state, such as Marquette in Michigan) to Mexico suburbia and island nations. While each is a very different setting, I can grasped the culture and tertiary characters associated from location to location.
While the science part is obviously fictitious, the attention to detail in explanation on why the abilities surfaced and how they interact with the environment.
