As a boy reads a book with his lovey, a monkey named Bobo, his cat, Earl, is always getting in the way. While engaging in dramatic, fantasy play, writing a story of his own, the boy and Bobo continue to be interrupted, over and over, by Earl, much to the boy's dismay. Young children, ages 2-5 will like this lively, humorous picture book story for its sense of fantasy and dramatic play.

After reading and enjoying, I Must Have Bobo, I was anxious to take a peek at the Rosenthal's latest book, I'll Save You Bobo.

In this book, Willy is a little boy who is having a hard time reading a book about dinosaurs to his pal Bobo -- his cat Earl keeps disturbing him. Willy is disappointed in the book so he tells Bobo that they should write their own book about Bobo having his own scary adventure in the jungle. Once they begin their own story the adventures begin, but not without Earl the cat causing some havoc once again.

Cream color pages with colorful drawings by Marc Rosenthal. Not very many words, and the ones that are on each page are in large letters for extra emphasis. Cute, but not exceptional. I liked the first book in the series a bit more.

If you have kids and a cat, this book is a must-read for you and your little guys. It gets the love-hate relationship between pets and children just right. Cat lovers will see Earl as the independent spirit that he is, parents will love seeing Willy turn his frustration with Earl into art. Bobo abides. The tone is perfect and the illustrations are effortless and beautiful.

While I think the first in this series was a more enjoyable experience for the three young readers in our family (7 year old girls and a 5 year old boy) they were all delighted to discover that Bobo, Earl, and Willy had returned. There was plenty of laughter as they examined the illustrations and shared their observations about the characters' emotions, as well as a number of requests to return to earlier pages so they could add their own sound effects. In short, they were fully engaged with both books in this series, something that is rather unusual, unfortunately. Nothing is more important for encouraging young readers than the understanding that reading can be great fun, so I'm very happy to endorse both books in this series.

In this stand-alone sequel, Willy's quiet time with Bobo (his best friend and sock monkey) is once again interrupted by Earl, the mischievous cat. The two go off to create an adventure story of their own - populated with enormous trees, python-looking snakes, giant poisonous mushrooms and ferocious tigers. I loved the way Willy uses his storytelling passion to wrestle with powerful emotions of anger and frustration. And although Earl is a cat, he could have easily been a younger brother vying for attention.

Willy continues his escapades under a homemade tent. But when Earl crashes through, Willy - very close to tears - retaliates by creating a new storyline, where the big snake is about to eat poor, unsuspecting Earl. And just as in their first masterful book (I must have Bobo), the drawings capture the body language of child and cat alike while each page becomes a charming vignette that can stand alone.
