Mrs. White was my 3rd grade teacher. She was the one that fueled and encouraged my love for reading and writing. As I continue to advance in school, I ace any reading or writing assignments, and am still inspired by what she taught me about writing.
Now about the book. Of course I am biased when I say this, but if I were a young child again, I would read this day after day after day and learn something new or notice something creative she wrote every time. I went to her presentation at an elementary school, and she still had new tips to share. Great book, even greater person.

You and your child will be transported to a small white farmhouse in the rain in this beautifully illustrated picture book. You follow a farm family's day as the rain begins - better take the wash off the line - and the melodic rhythm of the narration lulls you into a kind of calmness which echoes the drip-drop sound which raindrops can make. Scratchboard and water color luminous illustrations remind you of the rain and the patterns it makes, or a farmhouse screen door you peer out of to watch the rain falling. Each illustration is detailed enough to provide interesting conversation on what chores the farmhouse family has when it rains, and when the sun finally "sneaks" out.

This would be fun for a classroom to read and discuss what they do on rainy days and what they like to do on sunny days as contrast. You could extend it into an art project where on one side of the paper they illustrate favorite rainy days activities and on the other sunny day activities. Might be fun to do a project using a screen, paint and toothbrush. This book seems appropriate for preschool, kindergarten and first grade students.

m a big fan of Krommes illustration style, I could spent house just enjoying the beauty of these illustrations. The story is also excellent. While deceptively simple, the words and illustrations combine to create a thoroughly enjoyable picture book experience. The whole premise is based on the arrival of a rain storm. The reader gets to see the storm blow in, leave its mark and then disappear. The whole thing feels like a real experience as the reader sees the reactions of the animals and people to the changing weather. Not only does this book provide beautiful illustrations but also read like poetry, which I loved. A true winner that would be perfect for sharing during a rain storm or in a classroom studying weather or seasons.

I am a grandmother but have been collecting children's books for myself that have excellent illustrations, a moral or humorous story and I am delighted that I have added this book to my collection. I highly recommend this book, not just for those reasons but the children that I have shared this book want me to read it again and again.
I love this book. You will not be disappointed if you purchase it.

This is the perfect rainy day book for use at home or in the classroom. Read it aloud as the evocative illustrations capture the change in weather and the downpour that visit this farm family. Of course, eventually the rain stops and the sun returns late in the afternoon. The text is very simple but it is enough to make this book work...you are purchasing it because of the marvelous art and it is very, very good. A fun read for a wet day!

Blue on Blue is a gorgeous book, with a lovely poetic rhythm. The words paint a wonderful picture in the reader's mind. And the illustrations are equally incredible!
The text is simple, yet effective in captivating the imagination. As a parent, I love finding books that my kids pull off the shelves time and again. As a teacher, I love finding books with text so vivid that students see exactly what the author has crafted. I am excited by this book, and enthusiastically recommend it!

WHY I LIKE THIS BOOK: Dianne White’s rhythmic text builds and bursts just like the thunderstorm it depicts. Beth Krommes’s illustrations add an additional layer to the story, showing the reaction of a girl and farm animals to the storm. Young children will love the rhythm and rhyme. In the classroom, teachers can use the book to discuss weather patterns.

RESOURCES/ACTIVITIES:
White’s Web site includes a teachers’ guide.
Replicate Krommes’s scratchboard technique following instructions on babbledabbledo.
The Kennedy Center’s site includes directions for making your own rainstick.
