This is the third book in the Unwanted series by McMann. McMann has said that she has seven books planned for this series. This was a decent book in the series, the beginning was a bit slow but it picked up pace in the second half of the story. I read this with my six year old and we both enjoyed it. The following contains spoilers from book 2, so just be aware of that before reading on.

This book picks up right where The Island of Silence leaves off. Alex and crew are struggling with Mr. Today's death and trying to survive on the barren part of the Island that used to be Artime'. Lani and Samheed are still being held captive on Warbler island. Aaron is still doing his best to take over the rule of Quill (the dystopian society that Alex and the other Artimeans were purged from). This book is mainly about the struggle to restore Artime' to its former glory, rescuing Lani and Samheed from Warbler Island, and discovering a new Pirate Island.

This book was engaging and easy to read. There are lots of wonderful characters here as well.

Alex plays the lead role throughout the book as he struggles to restore Artime and take over Mr. Today's role as head mage. He struggles a lot with the responsibility and the stress of it. He also struggles a lot with confidence, as the book continues he grows into his responsibilities and learns it's okay to believe in himself and to accept help from his friends as well.

The other two characters that play very large roles in the story are Simber and Sky. Sky is the silent girl that was introduced in Island of Silence. She is smart, supportive, and an excellent compliment to all of the stress that Alex is dealing with.

My 13-year old son couldn't put it down and I also enjoyed this third book in the series! It kept me interested, engaged, and wondering what would happen next. The characters are interesting and show growth and dimension. This book continues the themes of good and evil as well as leadership and tough choices. Nicely done!

The Unwanted series started off feeling a bit like a poor shadow of the Harry Potter books, but by the second book gained its own unique voice and no longer seems derivative. Lots of imagination and characters to care about. I'm in for the duration- I want to see where the series goes and though I can guess at the larger undercurrent of mystery as to the nature of the world- I look forward to seeing how it plays out and how it is revealed. I think there are 7 books planned for the series. In book 3 we discover another dysfunctional island- quite different from the first two.

We've been reading the series out loud to the kids. I've noticed that Lisa McMann's writing has steadily improved. The kids loved the first two books, but I thought the writing in the first one in particular was very clunky. The second one was a little odd, but the writing was better. This one is the best one yet - the kids still love it, and the writing has improved immensely - much less long description where an action would do, and better setup for the more suspenseful moments and surprises. You can't skip to this one (it won't make sense without the first two), but if you've started the series you should definitely continue it with this book.

I LOVE this book. It finally shows what happened to Samheed and Lani. It also shows what happens when Mr.Today dies. For the first time ever, Artime is worse off than Quill, and some unwanteds leave. The only problem is that Sky TOTALLY REPLACED MEGHAN! Maybe this was a preparation for Meghan dying. She barely appears in the fourth book, and by the time they came back it was too late!! She was no longer a major character, and before she had time to redeem herself, she died!! Other than that I loved all the Unwanteds books the same exept for books 4 and 6. Book four is awful, so here is a summary of what happens so you do not waste your money. The characters rescue Crow's mother, and go on to a dying island that is really boring. Then they go on past that island and wind up on the eastern side of the islands. That is all.

This is the 3rd book in this series & it was fantastic. It was exciting filled with action & adventure. I can see this series getting better as the books continue. Im loving the progression & growth of the characters as well seeing them grow up & slowly becoming adults. i still love finding this creatively imaginative series. Cant wait for the next one

This book was absolutely amazing. This was my third time reading it, but I just now realized how well-written it was!

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read science fiction and fantasy combined.

I loved everything and disliked very few things.

Thanks to my good friend Eir (Erin) for recommending the series!
