Now for a review from someone who is not apparently a colleague or sibling of the author (one is from Baltimore, where the author works, and the other has the same surname, which ain't exactly "Smith" or "Jones").

Anyway, if the rating system were more granular, I would give this book 3.5 stars instead of 4.

It contains good info, but it is short (less than 100 pages), and that's not because "that's all" - the author admits at the end it's just a beginning.

I wish there was more code, more specific examples of what to do/not to do, etc.

One final "nitpick": to quote the Princess Bride, "I don't think that word means what you think it means."

Explanation: the first time I saw the word "tenant" where "tenet" should have been, I thought it was simply a typo; but then it appears several more times after that, most notably in and around page 90. A tenant is a renter; a tenet is a principle.

This book does a fair job of giving an overview of Android's design mechanisms for securing applications, but doesn't really offer much detail.

The writing is clear and is aimed at developers that have little to no security knowledge. You are likely to get most of this information from reading the Android developer documentation and the main benefit of having this book is that you don't need to hunt around for links or articles on the various topics.

A word of caution: This book is very short (around 100 pages) and feels over-priced to me.

This is a much needed book on a topic that a lot of developers have not had experience with. The mobile platforms have introduced a new avenue for developers to explore, this book is like have a guided tour from a trusted friend down the back alleys of the platform. It will help you to know the things that will protect your data and more importantly sometimes, your customer's data from the darker sides of the Android platforms. With so much malware on the platform, the safeguards discussed in this book are much needed to protect your app.

As the book discusses, if your app is used to compromise a user's device or expose private information, it looks very badly for you app and business and people will be slow to trust future versions or future apps. You need to protect your brand and to do that, you need to protect your customer's data. This book provides the resources for you to better protect your customer (and ultimately your brand).

This book provides a clear explanation of application security and secure development practices for any developers working on the Android platform. The first chapter explains the basics of application security and how it is really risk management. The next chapter then explains the underlying architecture of Android, critical to understanding how data is kept separate between applications on an Android device. The next two chapters go into great detail about the permissions model, and provide a clear understanding of how to use it to secure applications, a collection of information never before collected in one place. Finally, the last two major chapters center on cryptography and how such capabilities can be used to secure data both on the device and in transit to other systems. In short, this book provides the key concept information for application security to developers working on Android. It will not make you an expert on application security, but if you are a developer who wants to build more rugged and secure applications, it is a wonderful resource. If you do want to get started in application security, and are already an Android developer, this book will get you well on your way. It is highly recommended for anyone who wants an understanding of the application security resources available in Android and how to use them to properly craft secure applications.
