My 6-year-old daughter loves these books! There aren't a lot of kid-safe graphic novels for girly girls. Girls can read graphic novels of any theme, of course, but my kiddo only likes to read about girl characters, and likes "pretty" graphics! But so many of the comics out there are aimed at teen and adult men, and aren't appropriate or empowering for younger female audiences.
Graphic novels are a great way to promote independent reading, since they're hard to follow when read aloud by someone else. And they are great for teaching emotion recognition, with multiple facial expressions per page. And most introduce the thought versus speech concept, which is especially good for kids with social delays, who don't always realize that not everyone says what they think or means what they say.

Love this series! Can't wait to swipe (borrow) the book once my young daughter tires of it. She's already read it about 4 times. It's fun, whimsical and refreshing. While the story is a similar kind of plot as Calvin and Hobbes (a child and his/her talking animal friend), it really shines on it's own. The art is colorful, fun, and original. The characters are cute, fun, and silly, but also intelligent and 3-dimensional at the same time. Lots of witty banter and magical fun. I also really like that the unicorn (Marigold) can actually be seen by Phoebe's parents. It is totally worth a owning—especially if you have a little girl (or you yourself reading funny, smart comics about sarcastic unicorns and their girls).

This is the second book in the series. I bought this book for my eight-year-old daughter. She loves it, of course. Surprisingly, so does her ten-year-old brother. They spent a couple of days sitting together on the couch and laughing over the story. I still find them picking up this Phoebe and Marigold story and the first one for an occasional reread.

...Unicorn. The slowly evolving story of the awkward girl and the narcissistic unicorn that began in Phoebe and Her Unicorn (A Heavenly Nostrils Chronicle) continues here, as Dana Simpson resists the temptation to freeze her creations in time. You will see Phoebe in particular grow and change, but even Marigold changes.

Kiddos enjoyed this nicely illustrated and hard-to-find graphic novel! They loved it so much we pre-ordered an upcoming sequel. This author is on a roll. We'd love to buy more from the unicorn series, but there are currently only two in print and one on the way.

With a title like this and a definitely feminine heroine, you may assume this book is targeted at girls – you’re wrong! The main characters are Phoebe, a self confessed nerd who met the unicorn, Marigold Heavenly Nostrils, after Phoebe accidentally threw a stone in Marigold’s face! Other characters include Max, who Phoebe really likes and another unicorn, Lord Splendid Humility, who Marigold has never fully seen but still has a crush on.

This delightful comic adventure story is hilarious, beautifully illustrated, easy to relate to and great entertainment. Although not actually divided into chapters or stories, there are a variety of events related, from problems at school, jokes, getting up to mischief, auditioning for the school play, unicorn birthday party and others. The events are easy to relate to, the text generally humorous and the whole book appealing. After the end of the story there are three extras – the first shows how the illustrator draws both characters to show different expressions, complete with annotations to explain them. After that there’s a recipe for making “Sparkly, Colourful Unicorn Poop Cookies!” and finally illustrated instructions to make an origami ‘Happy Horse’ head. My congratulations to the author and publisher, too, for actually presenting the text in a format children will be able to read (for once I’ve not got to plead for the text not to be in block capitals!) I believe the author is correct when, in her introduction, she makes it clear that it is for anyone and everyone “girl, boy, child, adult – Phoebe and her Unicorn is for YOU.”

Thanks to the author, publishers and NetGalley, too, for letting me read an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This follow up to Dana Simpson's Phoebe and Her Unicorn is a compilation of comic strip from her nationally syndicated comic strip Phoebe and Her Unicorn. The comic follows the adventures of a little girl, and her best friend, a unicorn named Marigold Heavenly Nostrils. The comic was originally called Heavenly Nostrils. It's appropriate for, and appeals to people of all ages. It's clever, funny, at times irreverent, heartwarming, and just so darn good! The comic went into national syndication in over a hundred U.S. newspapers in early 2015. It's also available on GoComics.com. Fans, as well as people who aren't familiar with the comic strip will love this book and the first book Phoebe and Her Unicorn. Fans of the new syndicated strip will notice differences between the new strip and the originals in this book, because Ms. Simpson had to go back to the beginning of the story so new readers could catch up, and her editors asked for some small changes. Buy this book, it's delightful.
