This book is an absolutely fantastic read for mental health practitioners and consumers alike. In a funny, intelligent, and thought provoking style, Dr. Sinaikin critiques one of the most complex issues in 21st century healthcare. In the appropriately titled "Psychiatryland" he takes readers deep into the world of biological psychiatry, a practice that often leads consumers of mental health treatment on a complex and dangerous regimen of brain altering chemicals. He focuses on the factors that have allowed this practice to spin out of control. Dr. Sinaikin compellingly deconstructs the practice of medical model bio-psychiatry through the lens of post-modern philosophy, and does so in a very user friendly manner.

The most shocking and eye opening portion of the book includes a behind the scenes look at the marketing strategies of powerhouse drug companies and their influence on the current practice of medical model psychiatry. He further deconstructs the biological basis of many psychological disorders, based on the very limited and less than clear cut data that medical model psychiatrists actually use to support their existence! For the medications used to treat them, how much better does a pill have to work than doing absolutely nothing to become FDA approved? You will see by reading this book. By far the most refreshing part of this book is the fact that Dr. Sinaikin is an accomplished psychiatrist himself with years of experience!

He doesn't stop with a critique of current medical model psychiatry, but goes on to provide alternative methods of reaching optimal mental health. As a mental health professional, I wish I could have a copy of this book for all of the individuals that I work with to help them make informed decisions about their own healthcare.

Format: Paperback
Psychiatryland should be a compulsory read for anybody considering taking a trip to their local psychiatrist or primary care physician for their emotional or psychological problems. Dr. Phil Sinaikin's postmodern perspective allows him to cover a wide range of problem areas within medical model psychiatry with an incisive critique. As Dr. Sinaikin asserts in the introduction to the book, "the carefully crafted image of psychiatry as a progressive medical science has come to supplant the reality of an unscientific, pseudo-medical specialty with imprecise and arbitrary diagnoses and questionably effective medications fraught with toxicities and side effects." One of his main arguments centers around the effect that billions and billions of dollars of advertising has upon the mental health consumer. Slick advertising campaigns funded by pharmaceutical companies overcomes the lack of scientific basis for the wide scale drugging of children and adults alike.

What sets Psychiatryland apart from other books critical of medical model psychiatry is the depth to which Dr. Sinaikin is willing to look at the bigger issues that have allowed psychiatry to spin out of control. What has allowed psychiatry to flourish into a multi-billion industry replete with dangerous and questionably effective brain-altering drugs that are being prescribed with reckless abandon and little thought to patient safety? Dr. Sinaikin's does not shy away from complex questions such as these and through his knowledge and experience is able to offer up detailed and complicated answers. If the reader expects to be given a cursory and sanitized answer to puzzling questions such as these, then he or she will surely be disappointed.

Format: Paperback
Dr. Philip Sinaikin has taken a frightening and often misunderstood subject and written a book that is not only clear, concise and easily understood, but at times even humorous. He has given practicing psychologists, therapists, social workers, psychiatrists and the lay public the opportunity to understand a shocking and bizarre trend in the field of psychiatry that is spiraling out of control. Dr. Sinaikin is able to present a strong case for how the public is being duped and manipulated into believing falsehoods about human suffering that is as much a fantasy as Disneyland - hence the title of this book - Psychiatryland. Dr. Sinaikin explains that the American Psychiatric Association and the Pharmaceutical giants have been able to perpetrate a lie on the American people like no other. Through the use of power and money they have been able to market and advertise not only pills to cure all our ills, but they have marketed the made up bio-psychiatric "diseases" and labels that need to be "treated" with their wonder drugs. We find ourselves in a world of ridiculous diagnostic labels and a public that is all too eager to believe in things like Attention Deficit Disorder, now being diagnosed in children as young as two years old, and the general belief that Depression is "a serious medical condition". We have been told over and over again that Depression is due to a "chemical imbalance" in the brain and that the drugs will cure this condition. There is no scientific evidence to the "chemical imbalance" theory, and it is ONLY a theory, and there is no medical or biological test to support this claim. Dr. Sinaikin explains that sadness/depression is a normal human emotion - a response to human suffering. Dr.Read more ›
