Jane Eyre is my absolute most favorite book ever. I could read it over and over again. Wuthering Heights? Not so much. I can recognize why it is an enduringly popular book, but it is a bit too dark and depressing for my taste. I have seen movies and mini-series based on the books. I have read modern day stories that draw heavily on these two books for their plots. But this is a unique way to show some Bronte sister love ... an imagining of fictional events in the lives of sisters Charlotte and Emily Bronte that seem to show where they could have received inspiration for their two iconic novels. Once I heard that this book was being released I knew that I had to own it. And I was not disappointed.

People who require absolute adherence to historical events will probably be quite unhappy with this novel. But if you are a person who likes to wonder "what if?" about things, to imagine how a family of sisters from the edge of the moors in England could all manage to write such ground breaking and enduring works of fiction, I think that you will find much to like in this story. Michaela MacColl interweaves true events from the lives of Charlotte and Emily Bronte with a fictional story of mystery and intrigue. At the beginning of each chapter a snippet from either Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights is shared, and then the events of that chapter show events that could have inspired one of the sisters to write that particular work of fiction in their lifetime. It ended up being riveting and very interesting, even if it was (mostly) fiction.

Charlotte is the older and more conventional sister. She prefers her world organized and proper, and she expects those around her to follow societal rules ... for the most part. Emily is more impulsive and unwilling to submit to those rules.

Charlotte and Emily Brontë, teenagers who've watched their mother and two sisters die, seem to have a lot in common. Both are strong willed and in love with writing. But Charlotte has always been the responsible one, the one who needs to take care of her family, to do the sensible thing. But she often finds herself jealous of her carefree sister, and wonders why it's always Emily that people admire, that people love.

When the girls find themselves back at home with their father and brother after a short stay at boarding school, trouble seems to be all around. Their brother is moody and often drunk, stealing away into the night for unknown reasons. And their father, the local pastor, is angering the local mill owners with his sermons calling for the care of the mill workers at the expense of profit. When Charlotte meets a haggard woman on the road begging for help, and Emily meets a mysterious young man on the moors, the two sisters realize they must pool their talents and strengths to solve a mystery and save their family.

ALWAYS EMILY tells a fictionalized story of the famous literary siblings the Brontë sisters, borrowing from their real history and wondering if they might have gotten some of the inspiration for their famous novels from their real life experiences. Some of the most affecting scenes are the ones that did occur, like the burying of their eldest sister, when the author must fill in the facts with emotions, imagine what the girls must have been thinking and feeling on that real day.

The mystery is well drawn out, as are the moments the girls find themselves irresistibly pulled to put pen to paper.

In ALWAYS EMILY, Bronte sisters Emily and Charlotte clash heads as much as impossible. They have two very different personalities and ideals about life. But when someone they know is possibly in danger, their father's life work is on the brink of being ruined, and their brother's mysterious behavior is cause for concern, they put their differences aside to help stop whatever is about to happen.

I can't decide which sister in this book I liked more! Emily is a bit on the rebellious side and will do whatever she wants to do. Both sisters live in a household where imagination and freewill are allowed, so she has a very hard time taking orders from her oldest sister. Charlotte, being the oldest, feels like it is her responsibility to keep things running smoothly. She wants to make sure that Emily has a good education, that they both become respectable women, and have a backup plan if their father passes away. While both girls' actions can be frustrating at times, they both have very admirable characteristics. Each chapter focuses on one or the other sister and lets us see their strong personalities. I really liked how MacColl structured the book.

Based off the summary for the book, I was expecting a lot of high stakes mysteries and crimes. Really, the book focuses on one. Yes, there are some minor events that take place, but it's the dire one that the girls turn all their attention to, as it should be. Emily, being the gutsy of the two, comes across a stranger in the moors who she deems needs her help. Charlotte is very reluctant at first, especially since this stranger is a handsome male. I don't want to share who he is due to spoilers but I will say that I thoroughly enjoyed his character and the presence he added to the book.
