Election! Addresses the process of electing a president of the United States. It discusses the presidency, our system of government, how a campaign works, who can be a candidate for president of the United States, how voting works in the United States, and finally how the election itself works.

Information is presented as answers to questions. Each answer is between half a page and a page and a half long. You can dip into the book and find a few answers to questions, or read the book cover to cover. Reading it from cover to cover is easy, because after reading the answer to one question, the reader gets hooked and wants to know the answer to the next question.

Dan Gutman's writing style is accessible. At the beginning of the section on the electoral college he writes "You'd better sit down for this. Lock yourself in a room and don't do any texting for a few minutes."(page 109).

Gutman includes an impressive amount of history, and this real life information helps to keep the book from being boring.

I was surprised to see that "Primaries have only been around since the 1970s." (page 62). I clearly remember the night of the California primary in 1968. It was the night Bobby Kennedy was assassinated. Given the accuracy of the rest of the book, I suspect the use of "1970" was an error in typing or editing.

At the end of the book, there's a glossary, a list of places to find more information, and a list of all the presidents. Unfortunately, there's no index.

Election! Is a fun way to find how American Presidential politics work.

I had high hopes for this book from Dan Gutman. He also wrote a series of baseball time-travel novels for kids, our favorite of which is [Satch and Me]. I'm glad I got this Election! book for free; this book gets it wrong.

America is not a democracy.

America is a republic.

Dan Gutman insists so often (pp 33-34, pp 36-38) in this book that America *IS* a democracy, that he must be doing it on purpose. America is not a democracy. America is a republic.

In a republic, the power resides in the people, who elect representatives. In a democracy, the power resides in the majority. A republic protects the rights of the individual and the minority; a democracy lacks legal safeguards for individual rights.

The Founders created a representative republic because they knew all too well that democracy means the tyrannical (often violent) oppression of minority citizens by the majority. History bears this out. Dan Gutman could read all about this in the Federalist Papers numbers 10, 14, and 48.

There is another error on page 114 -- the Bush-Gore election was held in 2000, not 2001.

The author seems to advocate for the elimination of the electoral college, mocking the founders and calling the electoral college system a "formality" before going on to grudgingly admit that it is a system that is fair to all the states.

The slant of the book seems wrong -- the focus of third-party candidates omits Nader (whose candidacy gave us Bush 43) and highlights various weak communist party candidates. Not especially helpful or relevant.

The best part about this book is the glossary -- includes terms like ballot, bandwagon, benefit, bill, Bill of Rights, cabinet, campaign... it's a 6-page glossary. Well done!

I got "Election," because I wanted to understand what was going on during election day. It really helped me accomplish that. I recommend this book for anyone who doesn't understand election day and has a good sense of humor.
