Needed a mystery book for my 6th grader and did a search based on young adult mysteries - and on the previous reviews. My daughter HATED the book - lots of cursing, violent murder ("he grabbed her by her hair and slammed her head into the steering wheel" , rape... Unfortunately, she had to read the entire thing because it was submitted to her teacher as a requirement, but she is too embarrassed to even present a summary to her class. Granted, I did not read the book and I am only going by her opinion, but she is a voracious reader and couldn't stand the tone of this book. May be better categorized for 16 and up...

Hook Island is Mathieson's best novel so far! And I've enjoyed all of them! I like that he's now into
Young Adult mysteries. And his teenaged sleuth, Becky Bing, is so convincing with her edgy, bright,
"take no prisoners" attitude. She's a great role model for each and every young (and older) women.

It was fascinating how the author wove into the story what happens to the teens in school and out of
the classroom to find clues to the heinous crimes.

The Hook Island storyline had me thinking all along who the culprit was right up until the very end. And
I was really surprised! The suspense was riveting!

I can't wait for the next "Becky Bing" sequel to come out soon!

Hook Island kept me riveted throughout the entire mystery. I enjoyed Becky Bing as the teenage sleuth and it brought me back to Nance Drew stories, but with contemporary sizzle.
The mystery has many twists and turns, and Becky shows us how a determined teenager can lead rather than follow. Her Chinese American heritage folded in nicely with some language lessons and how she methodically combined her young romantic life, her classroom subjects and her edgy personality to determine "who dunnit".
I highly recommend Hook Island to readers of all ages who like a great mystery but with some new and surprising ingredients thrown into the mix.
I've enjoyed all of Mathieson's novels, but Hook Island and this new Becky Bing series will keep the reader coming back for more!

I read only the first chapter BUT it was so violent and so descriptive regarding the violent acts I could not believe it!!!! I bought this book for my granddaughter who LOVES mysteries and in reading the description it sounded perfect for a 2014 tween who loves apps and knows the computer better than me. This Becky Bling supposedly solves her mysteries using a lot of modern technology. It stated that the parties involved were teenagers in school and although my granddaughter is only 12 like most young people today she is very "advanced". I WOULD NOT/DID NOT give her this book as I felt although I know and agree that a little violence in a mystery is necessary this one was "over the top". DEFINITELY not for a tween maybe if kids are still reading at 16 years old or 17 but definitely not the 2013 Nancy Drew that it was made out to sound like.

I do not normally read young adult books, but Hook Island: A Becky Bing Mystery was highly recommended to me. From the stunning beginning to the end, I enjoyed it. After the surprising opening, the story starts calmly but builds rapidly and smoothly towards the climax. The story is topical and convincing, and I was glad to find not excessively moralistic. The scene descriptions are well-written, the dialogue between the teenagers is natural, and the relationship between the heroine and her initially less heroic boyfriend is tender without being soppy. I in turn highly recommend this book, even for readers past their teenage years.
