Enlightening, well written, inspiring and so well documented! Provides enormous insight into the blacks ban from the priesthood era of the church. Elijah Abel is an amazing man. "His dedication and religious conviction in the face of enormous adversity are an inspiration to all who have wrestled with questions that challenge their faith." Great read!

Excellent research! If you want to know more about the priesthood ban on Black Latter-day Saints, you have to read this. Jackson brings the life and times of an early Black Latter-day Saint priesthood holder, Elijah Abel, from obscurity and sheds much needed light on this controversial issue.

In an interesting statement from a Huffington Post article, published during the 2012 presidential campaigns, in regards to LDS leadership and the race issue, it says, "I suspect that most LDS would be delighted to reject their history of racial exclusion if there were only a way to do so that would not threaten their beliefs about prophetic reliability."

For many Latter-day Saints, we have to balance the imperfections of past, and perhaps in some cases today, current leaders and doctrine as we build and strengthen our own testimony. The quote above reflects a flaw that even many Latter-day Saints may hold to, that our leaders are infallible. This is simply not true and Jackson comes to the conclusion that no official statement ever linked people from Africa to the seed of Cain. However, for much of the religious this fact was assumed at this point in history and the majority of the LDS Church membership came from former Christian denominations.

But is the LDS Church racist? No official statement of doctrine has come forth that defined the priesthood ban for blacks. However, some comments recorded in the Journal of Discourses are often used by critics of Latter-day Saints to highlight racism.

It's okay, but I got the impression that the author wanted to go in a different direction, but just didn't dare. He wrote a fair amount of filler because there isn't a lot about Elijah Able out there to research. The dates and facts are sound in my opinion, but you will quickly learn to discount a lot of the conjecture and assumptions that are employed to fill out the story. The overall story is enlightening and even inspiring, though you'll probably pay more than it's really worth in order to read it.
