I'd have to say that this is one of my favorite books ever. It's hard to imagine how much of an exciting plot Stephen was able to weave into just 212 pages. This could have easily been as thick as one of the Harry Potter books, but Stephen took it easy.

Not only is Stephen a gifted writer, but he's an amazing person, as depicted by the fictional character of his book: Paladin.

That said, there were quite a few plot problems where unbelievable things happened with no explanation, such as Paladin in one instant being high up on a wall, slowly making his way, then suddenly being down on the ground next to a soldier to retrieve Victoria's passport. A good editor could have caught all these, but the publisher wasn't of that caliber.

I do take exception to some of the points in the book.

I read and have a copy of Gorbachov's book: Perestroika: New Thinking for Our Country and the World. "Perestroika" was a deception poised as "change, when Gorbachev said "it is a strengthening of Socialism."

That said, another exception I take with the book is the depiction of Russia as an evil tyranny. My dad has traveled to Russia twice in the last year, and he says the Russia now is very different from the Russia he visited ~three decades ago. Now America is more wicked and corrupt and tyrannical than Russia -- by far. The US has become the primary arm of totalitarianism globally. Meanwhile, Russia is now playing more of a defender or goodness. It's entrance into Syria to confront ISIS recently -- which the US financed and supports -- is a good (and very sad) illustration of this.

Homosexuality has not become a crazed fad in Russia -- quite the opposite.

Stephen J. Stirling had penning an exciting, fast paced read. Paladin Smith is a high school history teacher and devout follower of the Mormon faith. When an adversary from his past calls upon him to save his daughter, the strength of his faith is tested, requiring him to travel 6,000 miles to do something well beyond anything he has ever done - perhaps something he never dreamed was possible. In the process he relies on the inner strength of his faith and receives an opportunity to save more than one life and also change the world.

There is a powerful message of hope contained in Stirling's words. It is delivered along with page-turning action and steadily building suspense. The experience is an enjoyable read that was a distinct change of the recent usual fare. It is a well written, well told story that blends dogma with events that feel amazingly close to current tense international situations.

What does an author do with a fictional story about events which become reality before it is published? He still publishes the book, even though his story has a different outcome than the reality. The story is illustrative of a person who has a strong faith in his beliefs and yet willing to recognize that others may have differing views. It also does contain some unobtrusive tidbits about Mormonism, which I found interesting.

An interesting taste of Mormon culture mixed with political intrigue in an international setting. The main character is an Indian Jones type seminary teacher who is dropped into unusual circumstances. He responds to his challenges by reading the scripturs, praying, and relying on the spirit. The results are anything but typical. For LDS readers, this book helps you realize that gospel principles can be applied in any setting. For non-LDS readers, this is a fun introduction to basic church teachings and culture.

The Prologue starts with a meeting between an American and a Russian aboard a yacht. Something nefarious is going on and the American is confident that no man and no power in the universe will stand in their way.

Next we meet Paladin Smith, a school teacher who uses unique methods to get the attention of his class. He is visited by Congressman Chase one day. Seven years earlier, the Congressman's niece, Victoria Grant, was in his seminary class. Congressman Chase wasn't thrilled with the attention Paladin gave his students and forced him to resign. Now the Congressman has come to Paladin to see if he will go to Crimea to get Victoria to return to the United States. Paladin goes, not knowing how he's going to accomplish this mission. And once he arrives in Crimea, not everyone is happy he's there.

This book is fantastic!! It held my interest from the first page and was hard to put down. Paladin is just a regular guy that agrees to do something that seems simple but he still has no idea how he's going to accomplish it. He didn't do everything perfectly but was able to figure out what the next step should be, and as he got more involved, he realized that Victoria was surrounded by men she didn't understand.

Victoria respects Paladin but is also wary since her perspective was that he deserted her before. Victoria is trying to make a good life for herself but is in over her head. Paladin's married so there's no romance between him and Victoria, which I thought worked well in this book. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough as I wanted to know what would happen next.

Some of the villains in the book were obvious and I found others to be hard to figure out. It kept me guessing until the end. There is an LDS element to this book, but it's not preachy.
