It's a useful book but as the reviewer of the author's book "Deep and Safety Stops, including Ascent Speed and Gradient Factors" pointed out (in significant detail) a list of technical errors, there is danger when a non-technical person (scientist, engineer) writes about material that exceeds his training. An example that's potential dangerous (for the diver) is a comment on page 35, last paragraph, where Swanepoel writes: "... but gas dissolves per volume into a colder tissue more than when warm (warm beer loses its bubbles as it heats up) ..." which seems to go against results from physiology experiments. For example, recent US Navy studies show that a dive profile (w.r.t. temperature) where a diver is colder after the commencing a dive and warmer before ending is less conducive to DCS than the opposite case (warmer at start, colder toward the end, which is the typical scenario with divers fighting cold during deco stops). The basic is reason is that warm bodies off- and on-gas more rapidly when they are colder.

Overall, the book is a useful short guide to gas blending and some effects on dive physiology. However, for authoritative technical details (to the best of what's known in diving science) other books should be referenced.

The reviews you see on this page, above, are right on regarding this book. I found this book to be a great help in preparing for the Gas Blending Instructor certification course. I am now a gas blending instructor. I highly recommend Anton and his books.

This is a great book for divers interested in learning the theory and actual thought processes that go into blending breathing gasses. Anton has done a great job of breaking it down into simple step by step actions that produce the desired results in an easy to understand format.

This book would be fantastic in a classroom setting as it is written in a very friendly and easy to understand manner. It's equally valuable as a reference book and is particularly useful for divers looking to reinforce their technical knowledge. I've also suggested it to new divers that have expressed interest in learning more about breathing gasses beyond standard air fills.

This is a very useful read whether you plan to blend your own or just want to understand what's being done to your tanks. Highly recommended!

Just a wonderful book: full of charts and explanations. Perfect for the new gas blending student (like myself) or for the Pros who want it all laid out and available. A friend recommended this to me, and I'm thrilled that he did; it's a great reference book, as well as making understanding the theory easy. Thank you!

This book is really useful. As a gas blender instructor I suggest this book to every diver, to grasp the behaviour of the gases, involved in the blending process and in the diving activity in general. This subject matter is usually considered a "technicality" between divers that do not intend to become blenders. I don't agree. The Physics lays the ground layer in every diver's knowledge. This book is suitable for the purpose.

Preparing for CCR advanced trimix. Book is spot on, fresh from others on market that are sometimes outdated. Thanks Anton!
