A fabulous book for grades 3-6, about friendship, freedom, and the power of literacy. It will keep children's attention, and,at the same time, teach them so much! It takes place in 1850 at the time of the Underground Railroad and is about two 10-year-old girls who become fast friends when one of them hides in the other's house--a stop on the Underground Railroad. Amanda, the northerner, teaches Hannah, the runaway slave child, her first letters and Hannah teaches Amanda about the value of freedom and literacy. Suspenseful & moving, this book about freedom and how powerful you are when you can read and write, is especially timely now. A thoroughly enjoyable and valuable book for young readers (and adults, as well!).

For anyone who is teaching 2-4 graders about the Underground Railroad, I highly recommend this book. The main characters are their age so they can really identify with it. Before reading we do a study of Harriet Tubman.
This book really makes my students think and is great for reader's response journaling. (With several copies it could also be used for literature circles.) My students never want me to stop reading because they are so anxious to find out what is going to happen next!

This is a wonderful, heartfelt book that my son and I read together and could not put down. He was not the biggest reader at the time, but he was anxious to get back to it every night. It kept us on the edge of our seat!! The book made you feel like you were in the center of the story. I highly recommend this book for anyone, especially children above 3rd grade.

Overall, our class really enjoyed this book. We liked it because it taught us interesting facts about slavery and African American history. We would recommend this book to anyone over six years old. It's really great! One of our favorite parts was the emotional ending. It did have some difficult words that were hard for us to understand. But we loved all of the juicy words (adjectives) and showing sentences.

This story really touched our hearts. Roni Schotter knows what she is doing! She is a genius!
