Like all DK books, The Religions Book is an excellent resource. Beautiful, formatted well, easy to read. Fascinating subjects broken down into understandable overviews and reflections. You cannot go wrong when you buy a DK Publishing book. They are always written by reputable scholars, full of incredible illustrations or pictures, and a pure joy to read. You rarely even realize you are LEARNING! This book is no different. Buy it.

BUT . . . DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION. I have never seen a worse Kindle book. Whoever formatted this book for Kindle should be sent back to school (or prison?). You cannot read it on Kindle. You cannot read it on the PC. It pops up in a little box of tiny text that you cannot even zoom in comfortably to read! You cannot highlight. Just a terrible experience.

It really is not fair that an awesome book like this gets its reviews skewed because whoever was in charge of the Kindle version RUINED it.

I own a dozen or more DK books and treasure them all. The Kindle version is garbage, but the book itself is nearly perfect.

While the content of the book is great, the Kindle formatting is terrible.
It is completely inconsistent with every other Kindle book I have purchased.
Supposedly you can zoom to enlarge text and double tap to see all sidebars.
None of those features work.
Double tapping actually seems to randomly jump you back and forth between different sections of the book.
It seems that one other book in this series has formatting problems as pointed out on the kindle order page.
All of the DK Publishing books in this series need to be re-assessed as to readability.

I truly love this kind of book. I have the 'Philosophy' and 'Psychology' book both by the same author (DK Publishing). This book takes each major religion and really breaks it down to its essential beliefs. This book is also an easy read and almost a short story format. People who love to learn but do not have the time to read a whole book would really benefit from books like this by DK. This book in particular really answered a lot of questions I have had on other religions without being bias. It is so difficult these days to find a book on religions that is not bias and to me that's yet another reason to love DK publishing. Something else that this book covered which I really appreciated was it went into the different kinds of Christians.

This book is theology so there is interpenetration and points of view which the reader must decide on. This book is a great resource to have for any questions you may have on religion. If you are looking for a book that has all of the major religions in the world with clear information that is not bias then look no further.

I got this as a Bookbub offer, real cheap, but then read the reviews. I first hoped they were out of date, but apparently not. I'm looking at location 251 of 6928 on my MacBook Pro using the Kindle Reading App, specially downloaded for the occasion. I also have an old Kindle device, but I much prefer reading on my iPhone or Mac. Anyway, back to Location 251, it shows a map of the world with balloons on each continent, each containing tiny text. Double clicking a balloon in the illustration opens a dictionary popup with the definition of the (physically) nearest word in first line of book text below the illustration. Words like "because'"or "came" or "people" - not helpful. Perhaps the illustration itself needs to be clicked? No, same thing - Africa brings up "first- never previously done or occurring: her first day at school." Well that'a a bit of irony. This is my first negative review in which I request a refund of my (real cheap) investment. I don't do software testing for free. Please assume I got my money back unless you see an update to this review.

I must admit I am a huge fan of DK Publishing (who also produced The Psychology Book, The Philosophy Book, The Economics Book and The Politics Book). The Religions Book contains a quick summary of more than 100 theological ideas from ancient times to today provided by 9 different contributors. The writing is concise and informative so it is accessible enough for high school students and adults who want an overview of religious ideas. The book is divided into: Primal Beliefs from Prehistory, Ancient & Classical Beliefs from 3000 BCE, Hinduism from 1700 BCE, Buddhism from 6th Century BCE, Judaism from 2000 BCE, Christianity from 1st Century CE, Islam from 610 CE, and Modern Religions from the 15th Century. Each part contains a timeline and an introduction. Interestingly, the areas of philosophy, politics, science, psychology and other fields stem from early religious thought that has been cultivated and developed over time.

The focus is on the most widely practiced religions today (Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism) covered in chronological order. The section on ancient and classical religious belief is adequate but modern religions from the 15th Century are given rather cursory treatment. Modern Religions like Mormonism, Jehovah's Witnesses, Wicca, Scientology, Transcendental Meditation and more are covered but only get a page or two. Unfortunately, some of the books in the "Big Ideas" series tend to lose their steam as they get to the modern era and this is no exception. Neoplatonism is absent (apparently the authors identify it more as a philosophic tradition because it is discussed in The Philosophy Book). Likewise, Mystery Religions throughout the ages (e.g. Orphic Rites, Hermeticism and Freemasonry) aren't really covered in this book.
