By Deb HALL OF FAMETOP 50 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on March 26, 2014
Format: Library Binding
The rain had subsided and David smiled as he leapt over puddles as he raced to the synagogue. The doors to the synagogue were open wide for a special event, Simchat Torah. His grandfather’s new Torah would be taken out of the ark for everyone to dance with it. David had watched as his grandfather worked to create the new Torah for he was a “’sofer,’ a scribe.” The old Torah “had started to crack and fade” and the Rabbi requested a new one for the synagogue. Into the bottle of ink the quill went and out again to create those beautiful Hebrew letters. The process continued for more than a year until the Torah was complete and ready for the dance, a dance of joy.

The ark held not one, but two Torahs, the old and the new. Perhaps it was time to throw out the old one, but no, that would never be done. Grandfather claimed that the old Torah would be tucked away in his cabinet said “someday maybe I’ll have time to repair the letters, so it can be used again.” It was wartime and David knew that repairing and reusing things ‘would help the soldiers fighting against Hitler in Europe.” The dance was held in the synagogue and people touched the Torah “then kissed the tips of their fingers.” David soon became a Bar Mitzvah and it was time for him to become a sofer. Old and worn Torahs began to arrive throughout the years, but would they ever be repaired? Would anyone dance with them again?

This is a wonderful, heartwarming tale of a “Patchwork Torah” that charm the reader. The tale spans the years from the time David was a young boy learning about the tradition of the Simchat Torah and learning to become a sofer to the days his grandchildren would learn from him.

David's grandfather was a sofer (a scribe). He wrote a new Torah for their synagogue because the other one was starting to fade and crack. He put that Torah away in his cabinet, hoping to find a way to repair it. David marches alongside him as he carries the Torah during Simchat Torah; it's an honor. As the years pass, people bring them some Torahs that have been damaged and when David becomes a sofer himself his granddaughter comes up with a great idea about how to fix the damaged Torahs.

David spent time with his grandfather when he was younger and little did he know that was training in process for him to become a sofer himself one day. This shows me how time is so valuable with our loved ones, especially when they are pouring something into us that helps mold our character for the future. We never know just what will sprout from our seeds of time together, such as learning the Bible, learning different part of our parent's or other family members' jobs, planting food in the garden, helping to take care of smaller brothers, sisters, or other family members, helping mom to cook a meal, etc.

The illustrations brought me into David's world, showing me how the story unfolded visually.

It was time for Simchat Torah. A young boy named David, would celebrate his grandfathers new Torah. It was wartime and David would learn to be a sofer or scribe like his grandfather. As time passed David saw his grandfather receive may Torah's that needed repair. Each Torah had a story behind it. Soon, David had children of his own and his son Josh watched David, and still the collection of Torah's grew. One day, David's granddaughter suggested that he recycle all of the old Torah's to make one. Each piece would have it's own story to tell. But, will David have it ready in time for Simchat Torah?

Author Allison Ofanansky has put together a wonderful story of family, tradition and Jewish culture. Illustrations with warm colors of brown, yellow and orange bring to life this tale and each story behind the Torah. Young readers will be engaged. Parents and teachers will be able to share and discuss the terms and history regarding Jewish customs.
