I had read this book a long time ago and I had forgotten how enjoyable JV is in his writing. This is a period piece, set during the US Civil war and that must be remembered when reading. For someone who has not previously experienced JV before I'd advise reading 20,000 Leagues first for some context.

The Blockade Runners is set during the American Civil War. It's a fun little novella by Jules Verne that deals with a blockade runner heading to Charleston, South Carolina.

The captain, a member of an English merchant family, take on a sailor (a very unusual character - get this to watch him) at the last minute. He also has to take on the sailor's nephew. This changes his life in a manner he can't possibly imagine.

It's a free book for the Kindle, so give it a shot. It's a fun, quick read. First time I read a bit of Civil War fiction like this.

Here's a hint - Romance on the High Seas!

If you enjoy reading the "classic" authors, such as Mr Verne, this is a good read. Some concepts don't change, although the more modern Industrial Age equipment and transportation has. This book is a keeper.

This is a short story that I would pigeon hole as historical fiction. Set in the time of the U.S. Civil War, this story brings awareness to multiple facets of the world at that time: international and intranational political relationships, economic necessity and trade, transportation technology, and most interesting to this reader, physical geography and military strategy.

This is the first non-science fiction story by this author that I've read. I will certainly be looking in to more of his non-sf offerings.

Kindle version read: rated four-stars, flawlessly formatted with only one spelling error that I noticed.

I love to read. To pick up a book and get lost in the story immediately is the ultimate high. I did not pay much attention to the author until I looked up at the finish with my heart still pounding from the the adventure. We all know or have read "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" To discover another of this authors books is as exciting as his masterpiece rates right up there with opening presents on Christmas morning. I can't wait to open his next "masterpiece".

This is a very lightweight novella or novelette, I always forget which is which. The plot and the characters are very shallow and trite. But nonetheless, if you are looking for a quick and easy read, it will fulfill your wishes.

Even though this book was written over 100 years ago, it is still a very easy and good read. One problem with many books that old is the language (Victorian English does not translate to easily to 21st century American English). This translation from the original French is very good.

I enjoyed the read, and found it to be a good light fast moving book.
