I don't want to turn this review into a eulogy, but it's difficult to avoid doing so. The publication of THE PROSTITUTES' BALL comes on the heels of Stephen J. Cannell's passing, which came as quite a shock to me. Cannell was one of those guys who was larger than life, certainly greater than the sum of his own creations. I would wait until the very end of "The A-Team," "Wiseguy," "The Rockford Files" and many other shows to watch his trademark footage of him typing away while the animated paper flew out of the typewriter and into the pile. His novels exhibited the same attention to popular tradecraft as his television creations. The Shane Scully books, in particular, combined familiarity with just the right amount of edginess so that you knew what to expect, while at the same time you were waiting to be surprised at some point.

This is especially true of THE PROSTITUTES' BALL, the 10th installment in the Scully series. Cannell was always fond of tossing little changes into Scully's life, and he continues that practice here by throwing him a new partner, one who Scully does not want. Sumner "Hitch" Hitchens seems to be snakebit. He has a history of going through partners frequently, and it has not helped matters that one of his cases was the subject of a Hollywood-produced feature film in which Hitchens was played by Jamie Foxx. Hitchens's ego and his bank account seem to be vying to outdo each other, and both are irritating to Scully in equal measure.

To make matters worse, their first case together consists of a triple murder involving a world-famous film producer and two prostitutes. It is pretty much open and shut; security video at the scene conclusively shows that the doer is the estranged husband of one of the victims.

I highly recommend Stephen J Cannell as an author. This book is amazing for both readers and writers. As a reader you will enjoy this fast-paced murder thriller, but as a writer it's the 3-act structure that pulled on my attention. Because Stephen was a prolific and great screenwriter, he used the structure as a subplot to his latest Shane Scully novel. Not only does it work, but Shane Scully points out every facet of the 3-act structure as well as all its elements as the story unfolds.

The novel is to be read and enjoyed by readers but for writers it is a book to study.

If Stephen had to level us a legacy, he couldn't have done a better job. RIP, Mr. Cannell

I am a huge fan of Stephen J. Cannell and with his recent death I needed a good dose of Shane Scully. I started book 10 thinking "okay, this is the last, it must be great and end perfectly". The Publishers Weekly and Booklist review are perfect and right on. Prostitutes Ball (like all the Shane Scully Books) is an extremely well written, fast paced mystery with plenty of action, wonderful descriptions of the Hollywood hills, the Venice canals, and plenty of dry humor and police slang. I enjoyed this book immensely! I know that Scully, Alexa and Chooch will live happily ever after. God Bless you Mr. Cannell for the great entertainment. This reader will miss you!

All are great, but these two are at the top of my list: The Tin Collectors: A Novel (book 1) and White Sister (A Shane Scully Novel) (book 6).

Just discovered what a wonderful writer Stephen J. Cannell is and then also learned he has passed away. Dang, what a loss of such a amazing novelist! Prostitute's Ball was a not-to-be missed read and I will definitely be ordering more of his works. Hope there are lots more of his novels out there for me to devour! RIP Stephen!!

This is a fine stand alone book. You need not have read any of the prior Scully books. If you have, you are in for a treat. This is by far the best.

Scully is 'hitched' with Sumner Hitchens as a partner despite his best efforts to avoid the cop who became rich selling an arrest story to the movies. They get assigned to a multiple murder involving a Hollywood bigwig and a few prostitutes. What looks like an easy to solve murder morphs into something much bigger when a twenty-five year old crime is mixed in with it.

This book has all the elements that make a good mystery. Scully is a good three dimensional character and fine narrator. Hitchens is a terrific supporting actor. The pair compliment each other. The dialogue is excellent with a good amount of clever humor and banter mixed in without getting cute. The plot twists and turns, leaving the the reader guessing. The narrative also follows an amusing movie them and movie-making is a constant topic.

This is a good sold and entertaining mystery. Highly recommended.

This is the last book in the Shane Scully series. When Cannell passed away, we lost someone who can tell a tale with the best of them. He has the ability to draw the reader in a realistic setting with characters that we can't help but to care about with a wonderful writing style.

In his final go around, Scully has to look into the murder of two prostitutes and a film producer. After a while, he thinks the case is over, but he finds some evidence that doesn't seem to fit, it leaves questions, then the case is wide open again, and takes an unexpected turn for something that he's not ready for.

With all of this going on, he has to "break in" a new partner. He's not new to the force, but new to Scully, and nobody wants to be with Hitchens. It seems that Hitchens is nothing but a self promoter and wants to sell the case rights of this case to Hollywood can cash in on it, like he's done with other cases.

What I liked about this book is that Scully has to come to terms with who he is and what he holds near and dear, and has to make a hard choice.

This is such a nice close to the series. I know that Cannell will be missed, and so will Shane.
