I have the pleasure of working with co-author Jeanne Bradford and she is without a doubt one of the most focused thinkers I know. When her book came out, I read it - and now I know some of her mental aids. This book is full of visual concepts that will help you cut through the metaphorical clutter within organizations. Want to help a team define their work processes? The book shows you how to do that in a couple of hours, in 30 minutes! This book is a wonderful compilation of such tools: a must have for team leaders and team members alike.

We all know its hard to innovate - there always seems to be one more barrier, one more roadblock. This book will help you see the roadblocks before you get there, and better still, help you to jump over them.

The authors have a lot of practical experience in the real world of product innovation - and it shows in the contents of this book. The methods shown here are actually in use in some of the most innovative companies in the world - companies like Apple, for example. Its chock full of frameworks to help you get a better focus on your problem, and visual tools to help you see patterns you might not have even known were there - "Innovate Products Faster" delivers on the promise of its title, and then some!

What's also great is the wide spectrum of issues covered in this book - everything from strategy to team management to using qualitative data to dealing with unanticipated problems are covered in this book.

Highly recommended to anyone involved in planning and executing of new products in the real world.

As the CEO of a startup company, I am always looking for ways to drive innovation faster. Innovate Products Faster: Graphical Tools for Accelerating Product Development by John Carter is full of great ideas, with simple examples I can implement immediately, on an as-needed basis, so I don't waste time with monolithic changes when small adjustments are all that is needed.

I also liked the way it is organized. The writing is straightforward and the tools presented have already been tested by others and proven successful. These aren't academic ideas floating in an ivory tower - the tools are tactical, user-tested, and effective. There's also an appendix that allowed me to save time by looking up an issue directly and read the proposed solutions. I especially liked that the authors understood the need for speed - not just in innovating products, but in finding powerful ways to do that. There are boat-loads of books out there on this topic, but this one is designed to be a quick read, which I appreciated. Overall, it was very useful. I highly recommend it to the busy executive in the tech industry.

I keep the book on my desk, instead of the bookshelf, because I'm always finding handy tools and suggestions for a wide range of specific situations. It works well as a reference manual; I just page directly to the topic I need.

For example, my software deliveries have been late so I used "Increasing Product Delivery Productivity" in the appendix and picked the Tracking Real Time Progress section and used the Task Burn Down Chart to make adjustments. It took me all of 20 minutes and I had the tool I needed to solve my issue. Later that week I was kicking off another team so I read over "Getting Teams Off To a Good Start" which allows my next team to start off in a much better place.

Innovate Products Faster is a unique offering in new product development (NPD) literature. Organized around a set of tools that are visual and easy to use, Carter and Bradford throw ice water on the fiery dichotomy of innovation and time-to-market.

In the first section, Carter and Bradford introduce a slim NPD process that is largely directed by the innovation teams themselves. "Check-ins," rather than process and project reviews are advocated (pg. 3) in order to set up teams for success in innovation and speed to market. While many organizations will hesitate to hand over such decision-making authority to the NPD project team, autonomous use of these tools by the team members will most certainly build credibility with senior management.

In the final section of Innovate Products Faster, Process, the authors describe methodologies to support the previous four sections: Strategy, Management, Execution, and Organization. Many of these tools are familiar to NPD practitioners, such as Dot-Voting (pg. 193), Root-Cause Diagrams (pg. 201), and Half-Life Diagrams (pg. 211).

This book is recommended for NPD practitioners looking for fresh tools to enhance their innovation processes.
