There have been many books written about stereoscopic 3D, far more than most people realize. Yet, very few, less than a half dozen, would I recommend as "must reads" for professionals, or anyone interested in stereography for that matter. This book is absolutely among the top half dozen that do qualify. The points discussed in it may well determine the future of the industry. Anyone who wants to call themselves a stereographer must read this.

Comparing most of the 3D movies made back in the 1950's with the live action 3D movies shot or converted today, it is easy to see that they are quite different. Today's digital cinema productions should look a lot better. Unfortunately, they usually don't. Many of the lessons learned back then have been forgotten or ignored. As a result, 3D is much more expensive to shoot now, and the quality is much lower.

For example, depth proportions back then were very natural, but now they are reversed. In real life, the closer a person or object is, the more depth we perceive. In today's 3D movies, the closer that person or object, the flatter they or it appears to be. This book not only recognizes these common errors (and many more), but offers methods for correcting them. And, doing so for lower cost, shooting 3D movies on nearly a 2D budget. That is what this book explains. If every stereoscopic 3D movie were produced following the suggestions presented here, 3D would be assured a long and healthy future.

Reason why I liked this book is it gave the "reason" for 3D, just not doing it for a gimmick. Book is for people that either have a low end 3D camera, for people that have a interest in 3D, and for 3D experts that are pondering the more general concepts of why shoot in 3D. Book is not a howto guide for 3D, but does have some good suggestions for getting started.

Stereoscopy is a technological art in progress. When a production company hires a Stereographer, they are paying for an accumulation of experiential knowledge; and then, ultimately, one man's opinion. Clyde DeSouza ranks among the notable S3D technologists of our time. His prolific opinions, tend to strike at truth in the varied matters of our field. If you are intending to stay forward regarding 3-D imaging in 2012, I recommend that you hone your 3D directives by contemplating Clyde's warnings and welcomes, his analysis of the current dilemmas.

Clyde's book is the right place to start for the creative filmmaker and content producer. His discourse is straight-forward and positive. For those who understand the creative visualization process of planning your project in 3D from the start, Clyde's book covers the approach and concepts required for a successful capture. From the aesthetics to the technical, this book is a welcome addition to my 3D bookshelf! Demetri Portelli - Stereographer - "HUGO" / "47 RONIN."

"Think in 3D" is exactly what it purports to be: a broad contemplation of factors to consider throughout the entire 3D filmmaking process, from conception, previz, on-set, through to post - with the battle cry to go forth, experiment, study `the rules', and then learn when to break them. The author makes a compelling case for the need to *conceive* films in 3D rather than make this an after-thought.

The book is relatively light reading, written in a conversational tone, regularly asking questions of its readers and encouraging an open-minded creative and experimental approach to 3D filmmaking. The more technically-inclined will enjoy the explanations of miniaturization, multi-rigging, eye time-out, dwell time, depth continuity, roundness and cardboarding, circle of isolation and depth scripting; however, such readers will at times become impatient with ambivalent commentary and philosophical musings.

In places, the tone is cynical of the industry and the recent profusion of self-proclaimed "stereographers" with their litany of textbook rules, who the author rightly holds responsible for some overly conservative films that do not live up to their potential. In contrast, after mastering the technical aspects of 3D, the authors encourages filmmakers to make more daring choices (e.g. Hugo) that exhilarate rather than patronize audiences, and are more than worthy of those extra few dollars at the box office.

Desouza approaches the subject with a tone and gravity that allows those with an understanding of filmmaking or indeed stereo, easy access, bypassing the mathematical and scientific approach in favour of a more emotional and artistic angle. `Think in 3D' is a mission statement - not a guide to creating stereo from scratch for first-timers - but more a guide to how to approach stereo in a thoughtful and considered way for your audience. Desouza provides a valuable voice for the stereo viewing public, ensuring that Stereo is presented with a creative and technically correct angle, avoiding harm to audience's eyes and wallets through a mix of technical suggestion and a call for creative justification.
Avoiding heavy handed `rules' - Desouza poses questions per chapter - providing ultimately a selection of headings as food-for-thought for anyone considering stereo on their production.
