Trench, by Stephen Bull, is an excellent introduction to the trench warfare so prevalent in the First World War. He begins with the first examples of entrenchment, and explains how they developed into the complex systems which were present through the middle and end of the conflict. Lest you think this is a dry account with lots of cross-sections and tables, take heart, this book is absolutely engrossing, and covers all aspects of trench warfare. There are chapters on life in the trenches, weapons and tactics, gas warfare, sniping, and even the emergence of the tank and its effect on the trenches. The book is also replete with illustrations, including many excellent and fascinating pictures, and a wide variety of color illustrations as well. In addition, there are case studies describing individual actions, with an emphasis on the terrain and fortifications. Overall, if you have an interest in World War One, this volume is a must. It is a fantastic primer on the main type of warfare practiced on the Western front, and it gives you a real insight as to just how the soldiers lived, fought, and died in those horrible muddy holes.

This book clearly explains and illustrates trench warfare with its related technologies and counter-technologies. Without a clear understanding understanding of trench warfare it is impossible to understand World War I. There are a lot misconceptions about WWI that are debunked with this book. This book is incredibly well written with many large rare ultra-fascinating photographs from Britain's Imperial War Museum. The book is of the highest quality production with its high quality paper that accentuates the details of the extremely high resolution photographs. This clearly one of the finest books written on World War I with an incredible wealth of original material and never published historic photographs.

The 100th anniversary of the start of WW1 was the signal to publish all manner of books and documentary programmes devoted to that particular war. Whereas many of the resultant products suffer from an embarrassing lack of competent research it is always a pleasure to reveal one which stands apart from the rest - if only because it really is that good. As one who spends almost every waking hour immersed in researching lost ships (it's what I do!), I am aware of the complexities of uncovering relevant and accurate information. Having carefully studied this particular product, it is quite clear author Stephen Bull has mastered the art of finding those all-important facts. Having done so, he has put them together in an immensely readable, educational and hugely enjoyable work.

For those who know little or nothing about `Trench Warfare' - where neither side gained or lost anything appreciable - apart from thousands of lives, this work is a revelation. For those who thought they already knew all there was to know, I suspect it will also prove to be an education. For those who wish to study the subject - look no further.

After an illuminating Introduction, the book commences with an equally informative Chronology which the reader will continue to consult as the book is studied. We are then treated to an overview of the armies involved and of the beginning of Trench Warfare. All soldiers have to `dig-in' and no ground gives way easily when you are using an army-issue folding spade at a time of desperately wanting to become instantly hidden from the enemy. Who would have thought that those first defensive positions across the Western Front would have been extended and modified to such extreme limits.

The centenary remembrance of World War One was bound to encourage a flood of books on the conflict. Stephen Bull's study of trench warfare stands out among those recently published for its scholarship and readability. Bull punctures many common stereotypes about trench warfare, and clarifies multiple points that likely confuse a non-specialist reader. For example: Bull argues that the common view of trench warfare as a static response to battlefield conditions is inaccurate; rather, the trench system continued to develop throughout the war, from initially fragmented defensive lines to a complex, interconnected web of lines, connections, and shelters. Soldiers continued to improve both the design and the effectiveness of their trenches throughout the war. Bull also identifies the differences among the armies of combatant nations in how they framed the concept of trench warfare -- the Germans as a means of holding what they had gained; the French as temporary locations from which to regain territory lost to the invader -- and how these differences shaped the development of their respective trenches. Bull's text is well-written, carefully documented, and effectively illustrated. Bottom line: a good read, and a valuable reference for anyone wishing to gain a better understanding of the war that shaped 20th and (now) 21st century Europe.
