My son was diagnosed with ASD in January 2012 and it took us 3 years to put all the "pieces" together to get where we are today. Many of that 3 years of exploration, failure and discovery could have been reduced in duration if we had access to Dr. Pizant's book.

So many therapists (both in school and private operations) don't "get it". They focus on the deficits and "extinguishing behaviors" when they should be asking "why is that behavior present"? My wife and I finally figured much of it out after trying therapy after therapy and enduring years of meltdowns and stress.

The "answers" for our son were
1) Our son has sensory over-responsivity. Parties, amusement parks, recess are all massively over-stimulating and stressful. We don't avoid these things but know he can handle only a few hours.
2) He has some challenges reading and absolutely hated to do it UNTIL we discovered how to use his "enthusiasms" e.g. Star Wars, Minecraft, World War 2, to get his engagement
3) He can relate better to folks if they meet him in "his world" - from there he comes to trust you and is willing to enter your world.

We just finished a two-week trip to Europe where we employed lots of sensory supports (e.g. ear muffs), using a rental car rather than public transportation (which is loud, somewhat 'unpredictable' and out of our control), we alternated "big" sensory days (e.g. amusement parks) with "low" sensory days - watching TV and going to the pool. And he had NOT ONE meltdown.

We had to discover all of these strategies by ourselves largely.
Having more folks like Dr. Prizant we could have discovered these strategies MUCH earlier.

The word "Human" herein is critical. 1. Prior books aimed at a similar audience (educators and parents of children on the autism spectrum) have had varying degrees of success; but while at best, the clinicians humanely write clinically, and the parents humanely write as parents, Dr. Prizant is a clinical pro and not a parent, yet he combines his clinical mind with a parent's humanitarian need to break spectrum behaviors down into—yes—human nature, because these are human beings we are talking about. Herein he shows us that there are two types of behaviorists: Those who have the energy to conduct the detective work needed to find the human origins of a behavior, or those without that energy who are charged merely to "fix" the behavior no matter what the internal cost to the individual. 2. He will take heat for not (even once!) engaging in the unnecessary demonization of the diagnosis itself. And so humanely overwhelmed parents of significantly-challenged kids—those clinically depressed parents without supports (thinly disguised as the "warrior" crowd)—might take a shot or two at him. 3. Dr. Prizant's clinical career is illusionary, a cover; for a first-rate humanitarian.

Disclaimer: I'm in the book. Promise: I'd write this if I wasn't (I'm on the spectrum, and most of us suck at lying). Dr. Prizant is finally off my list (was 3, now 2) of autism pros who need to write books, yet haven't.

A must-read for parents and educators.

Humane, sensitive, respectful. I enjoyed especially the section on listening; so poignant with wonderful examples and such a key and under attended to concept to write about in this context, and the section on emotional memory. Wisdom to learn from and celebrate throughout.

The world is a better place when people with knowledge and wisdom share their intellect and experiences. This is excellent. I describes what to do instead of just falling back on "it is just a behavior." If I would have read this book at the time of diagnosis, we would have been much better off. A must read for parents, teachers, and therapists. A game changer. Nice combination of an expert's experiences mixed with the point of view of people with autism (because he took the time to get to know people with autism and why they do what they do).

I love this book. It's a must-read for any parent, educator, caregiver, family member, friend or anyone touched by autism (and special needs, too). This is paradigm-shifting in every way, beautifully written by a brilliant author.

Can't wait to re-read Uniquely Human. Barry M Prizant shares vignettes from his decades long career working with people on the autistic spectrum. Although he focuses on ASD, much in his book is applicable to all parenting and working with the unique aspects of all people. I found his book inspirational and applicable to parenting and teaching all kids.
