This is the third Jefferson Tayte genealogy-themed mystery book in the series. This time Tayte doesn't have an American client whose family tree he is researching, but rather is visiting his friend in London, when his friend is killed and he finds himself following the trail of his friend's research.

Like both the other books in the series, the writing is excellent--characters and settings feel real, dialogue sounds genuine, the pace was great. Tayte is a great character, and I can't wait to find out what surprises his own family tree holds!

For my tastes, it was a little too much action and not enough genealogy and research, compared to the other two books. I also missed the overlapping points of view of those researching in the present and those living the history in the past. If I hadn't read those two first (and LOVED them so much), I wouldn't be spoiled and would probably give this one five stars. Nevertheless, I was completely engrossed, and couldn't put it down, and would absolutely recommend the whole series!! (In fact, it boggles the mind that these are so low-priced, when there are so many full-priced books out there not nearly as entertaining!)

At what point would I take a break while reading this book? When a meal out with his friend and mentor Marcus ends in tragedy.
It's no easier as the historical element of the plot develops and MI5 become involved. In order to save the lives of others JT must get to the root of his late friend's research.
Just as I think maybe I can put the book aside till evening the action hots up and I become almost as breathless as Jefferson as I take in the chases and increased risk the unravelling of the puzzle is bringing about. I'll read on for just a bit longer.
Now the body count is rising and the mysteries of the past are proving to not only pose a threat to our hero but to the very monarchy itself. Who can be trusted?
By now I have reached the point of no return and I simply need to know the outcome for all concerned. As we move around London in a quest for answers I am enthralled by the descriptions of the sites visited and take time to appreciate the research that has obviously gone into making the scenes so authentic that I can visualise them in my mind's eye.
So now approaching the final chapters I just can't conceive how the answers can be revealed and all parties remain safe, and I do so want a happy ending as I sense a possible love interest for our lonely investigator.
I don't like spoilers, suffice to say just as I started to relax and cogitate both the outcome of the story and skill of the author the final page made my jaw drop!
For me this book had it all.....Mystery, history, genealogy, conspiracy, puzzles, believable characterisation and action from start to finish.

Each book by this author gets better. The link between the far past royal family and today is done well. Different from past books where we actually saw past events, this book uses information from history to progress the plot. The ending shows accurately a genealogist's dilemma with some research.
Don't think because this is a genealogy mystery this is a book full of lists and process, the action moves quickly, the climax is surprising and there is a hint of more to come.
The "hero" is no typical investigator - a little overweight, addicted to chocolate, no gun, no bravado. That's what makes this book so believable, he comes across as very real.

Hungering for an old-fashioned, classic detective novel, with secret codes, historical tie-ins, and great locations, I was thrilled to find The Last Queen of England. I'm weary of protagonists who'develop' as the story goes on--shorthand for more than I care to know about their inner struggles and dysfunctional families. For me, the story's the thing, and if it's literate and well-written, I'm happy. Make that ecstatic. What more can I say? Others go into the plot at length, no need to go over that again. Robinson's research is accurate and satisfying, his knowledge of genealogical technique fascinating, and the man can write his way out of a conundrum right into a crisis. I'm buying his other two books.

After the previous novel, one I thought superbly structured and managed, the characters fleshed out so well that this reader couldn't but become involved in the plot and final outcome, The Last Queen of England was a total anticlimax. Devoid of heart and soul, this was a novel so contrived that I just wanted it to end. One for historical enthusiasts, I fancy, but genealogy geeks would surely tear it apart for the nonsense it was.

I wanted to like this novel. The title was eye-catching. Yet there were many flaws: the genealogical searches were interminable, mostly inconclusive; the author needed a good editor because there were inconsistencies and an often clouded storyline. And finally in the epilogue it was hard to know what the author meant. Maybe a sequel? Except for a lesson in genealogy I'm not sure what i gained from reading this novel. I cannot recommend it.

t must be me, I read the book through, but for the life of me did not for one minute tie anything together.Geneaology can be very confusing, some of the authors books had a simple straight forward story, this one was all over the map
