With the Spear safely tucked away, Kendall's hunt for the next of the four holy relics has her uncovering secrets of the past - of the secret society which protects the relics and those of Kendall's own past as well - as she searches for the Fountain of Youth.

Fountain of Secrets is better than the first book in a lot of ways - first of which is that Kendall doesn't get kidnapped even once this time around (though she's still falling into holes.) One thing that I especially liked about the book is that there is a strong tie-in to Arthurian legend here (and probably next book too since the next relic is the Holy Grail.)

Another thing that is better about the book is that leads and their back stories are explored a bit more. There was also a big improvement in Jake as a character - last time he used his lecherous comments to keep Kendall at a distance, this time he's still on the make, but he ends up being much more likable and the pair actually feel more like a team.

Things that worked less well for me were: the info dump diary entry to recap the last book (in italics - large expanses of italics irk me), I still have issues with the dialog (which makes it harder to engage with the characters), and there still wasn't enough interaction with Nathan - it's hard to be team Nathan if he's constantly sending Jake and Kendall off together, but I really 'want' to be team Nathan. (For awhile it seemed like the love triangle was going to resolve - but I suspect that it hasn't.)

So, trying to distill all these random thoughts into a bottom line.

I definately recommend reading the first one because I found myself lost a big part of the time. The story hinges on finding religious relics and searching for the fountain of youth. There are people trying to find the same things for a their own reasons that are not for the good of others. There is alot of treasure to be found and saved and the psychic abilities of Kendall come into play. As I said the first book may have made this easier to follow.

I loved her "Highland Warriors" and now "The Relic Seekers" Indiana Jones and Sherlock Holms all wrapped up in these well written stories. Throw in Knights of the Round Table ghosts, seers and hunky guys is a win win can't put it down page turner! Nothing drags on and on. Sex scenes, yes, but not graphic porn. Great characters but not so many you forget who's who. Realistic scenario's with very funny quips. Yes, I give it a 5 star.

Back in the Fall of 2012 I read the first in this series. It wasn't bad: It was a light read with an interesting story line. The writing was not mature and the ending was non-existent. But I said I wouldn't mind reading the sequel, thinking that there would be an improvement in the next book. Plus, I liked the story line that included some ancient keepers of a castle, some interesting treasure and two handsome men vying for the attention of a beautiful woman knowledgeable in antiquities.

There has been no improvement in the writing; in fact, it has taken a step backwards.

The story that began in the first book continues in this one. (So, that's what happened to the first book's ending: It was a lure to get you to read the second book.) The characters took one week off and are back at the same site in Italy, dealing with the same treasure, and in conflict with the same ancient keepers of the treasure and the same bad guys. There is the same tension between the main characters. What made the first book interesting--a new story line, developing characters, describing and setting the scene--is missing from the second installment. It is safe to say that--like there was no end to the first book--there is no real beginning to the second book.

My advice to anyone contemplating reading this "Fountain of Secrets"? You will be lost and feeling empty if you read this before reading the first book. Check out the first Relic Seekers book. It's available used for under a dollar.

I'll end with a note to myself: Self, next year, please do not pick up the third in this series.

Fountain of Secrets is the second book in a series. Since most authors give the reader a run-down of what the reader needs to know in some form or another at the beginning of a book, I wasn't worried picking it up even though I hadn't read Guardians of Stone, the first book in the series. We do receive this run-down in the form of main character, Kendall, writing in a journal some of her previous actions. However, I think it would definitely behoove readers to pick up the first book first for continuity and clarity, as the plot and the motivations of the characters don't always make sense. This may be cleared up by having read the first book first.

What intrigued me about Fountain of Secrets was that these three characters, Kendall, her boss, Nathan, and her bodyguard, Jake, are on a supernatural quest. The first book is a set-up of the world and characters, and likely some adventures, and this book is a quest for a fountain (guess which mythical fountain...). Obviously something's going on between Kendall and her boss, and something already happened between Kendall and Jake in the last book, which makes for some sparks in this book.

Even with the idea of a quest in this book, don't be fooled by the idea that each book will be another quest for a new item. That would assume that each book is a complete story arc that leads to the next story. This book chops off at the end. Cuts off. Not just at a large, and I mean, humungous, cliff-hanger (not a twist), but the end chops off the story completely. (LONG RANT: I wish publishers would better identify those novels that are more like old-fashioned newspaper serials, because I don't pick those up. If I'm tempted, I wait until at least one story is complete and they're selling all the little pieces in a boxed set.
