I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I felt drawn into it from the very beginning. I just kept wanting to read on because it was such a fascinating story! The main character is so easy to sympathize with and I loved that he had an alternate world where things went well for him since my heart ached over all that he had endured. When maintaining two worlds becomes a problem for him I had so much angst over how it would resolve! I never saw the twists coming but they were brilliant and enhanced the story so much. What a remarkable emotional journey I was taken on reading this book! I highly recommend it. Even though the characters are high school age, adult readers can just as easily relate to the feelings and issues presented in the story because I surely did. It is the perfect type of fantasy- subtle enough in the story that you almost could believe it to be real (or wish it could be!) as you are reading....

Disclaimer: I received an advanced reviewer copy of this book from the author, who was a fellow student at Seton Hill University’s Writing Popular Fiction graduate program.

As you can probably see from the rest of my reviews, I don’t often read either romance or young adult novels. But that’s okay, because even though IN A WORLD JUST RIGHT is being marketed as a young adult romance, it is really neither.

Sure, the characters are high school students with high school drama and conflicts. But the problem I’ve run into when trying to read previous YA novels is that the characters come across as just trying too hard to be cool. Instead, Brooks writes realistic, believable, emotional people who don’t sound like they’re in a CW television show. I am also incredibly picky about the level of teenage angst that I will put up with in a book. The protagonist, Jonathan Aubrey, is absolutely entitled to his share of angst based on his backstory, but he never falls into the cliché of whiny entitlement. Older readers, male and female, will absolutely be able to relate to the main characters in this book because they are written as people, not teenagers.

And while this is definitely a boy meets girl story--sort of--it’s not a stereotypical happily-ever-after romance. It is fascinating to watch two separate relationships between almost the same people develop simultaneously. And I won’t ruin the ending for anyone, but the conclusion to IN A WORLD JUST RIGHT is more startling and gripping than the run-of-the-mill romance novel will ever manage.

This is a fantastic first novel by debut author Jen Brooks. I’ve had the pleasure of reading other work by her in the past, so rest assured that she is no one-hit wonder. I can’t wait to see what she shares with the world next.

I thoroughly enjoyed 'In a World Just Right' by Jen Brooks. The author writes beautifully, the prose clean and descriptive. The story blends romance with sci fi/fantasy. The sci fi component is imaginative, which I find refreshing after reading so many formulaic entries into this genre recently. The protagonist's world making power sets the perfect stage for the story line.

The powerful ending completely surprised me, weaving all of the threads of the story together in compelling fashion. The book left me with an emotional reaction and a positive message: The good we do in this world, no matter how trivial we may consider it, makes the world a better place.

This is a great message for teens, but I highly recommend 'In a World Just Right' for adults, as well.

I wrote a handful of reviews a few months ago about some books I bought my children at a YA book reading event for several local authors. Many of the books sounded wonderful, but I limited the purchases to one book per child. This one was just outside everyone’s top choices, but it came with a very interesting premise. A couple weeks later, I was given an Amazon gift card, so I finally bought it.

And I’m so glad I did. It has turned out to be my favorite from that event. Let’s set the story:

When he was eight years old, Jonathan was one of three survivors of a plane crash that killed most of his family and left him badly scarred. Ten years later, he lives with his uncle, and they barely interact. He regularly skips classes and probably won’t graduate—let alone go to any kind of college. He’s a loner at school, having created walls that close him off from his classmates.

Despite his sad and unfortunate existence, Jonathan is smart and creative. So creative, in fact, that he has the power to create alternate realities—worlds similar to our own yet very different, worlds designed to play out according to his initial parameters. When the real world gets him too down, Johnathan can just close his eyes tightly and imagine himself in another world. If I could satisfy some guilty pleasures in “Johnathan’s smoking hot dance club,” I’d occasionally skip classes too!

The world he visits the most—the world that’s just right—is the one where he doesn’t have any scars, the one where he’s a star athlete on the spring track team, the one where Kylie Simms is his girlfriend. She’s smart, athletic, beautiful, and totally in love with him…because that’s the way he made her.
