The Cormorant brings Miriam Black for much of the same—and more. There’s cursing, action, cursing, plot twists, cursing, sex, cursing, violence, and cursing. OK, it’s really not that bad, but if you’re going into this with virgin eyes, be prepared for a no holds barred adventure that’s balls-to-the-walls nearly the entire 384 pages. Awesome, right? Standby.

If you’ve read Chuck Wendig’s prolific blog or the prior two Miriam Black adventures, you’ll be right at home here. And that’s just it: home. Wendig has done an amazing job developing a growing following of fans with his indistinguishable voice. He’s lewd and crude and lays it all out. He’s like a rock star—a heavy metal rock star. Fans of such will appreciate the ride. Others may not appreciate the nuances amongst the loud noise.

Many people will cheer “hell yeah” as Miriam rips through the pages. She’s the type of character that people like to cheer for. She’s kicks ass, yet she’s deeply flawed. Some people won’t cheer—simply because of those flaws. She gets into messes and her personality is a reflection of such.

For me, I’m going to have to restrict my rating based on the complexity of the writing. The plot was interesting, yes. There were twists, yes. There was adventure, yes. But everything seemed to hit the same note. It’s like reading a video game versus reading a novel. Many people will love this, but it’s just not what I’m after in book form.

Thanks to Angry Robot for providing me a review copy of this book.

Chuck somehow tops the darkness of the previous two books in the series while simultaneously taking us down to sunny, sunny Florida. It's a tall glass of lemonade, laced with rum, drank out of a broken glass. It'll chew you up and spit you out.

Gimme some mo!

Miriam Black has been conned, which answers the age-old question: Can you bulls*** a bulls***ter? Miriam proves that yes, you certainly can, but the bulls***ter will fight back like a hellcat.

A year has passed since the events in Mockingbird, where we saw Miriam cut ties and go back to her ways as a drifter. She finds herself in Philadelphia living in a rat-hole apartment with several roommates that she helped by saving them from their deaths. As is the case with dear old Ms. Black, the arrangement doesn't last. One of the roomies does Miriam a solid by placing an ad on Craigslist for psychic services and Miriam hits pay dirt by answering an ad with a promise of a $5,000 payout. Off Miriam goes to Florida, thinking this request is way too easy. Turns out, it's all a ruse. A well-plotted, intricate ruse that ends in an unforeseen reunion.

As with the previous Miriam Black novels, this on has the trademark wit and sass that I expect from both Miriam and Wendig. What I wasn't expecting was the amount of second-guessing on the part of Miriam. It seems as if perhaps Ms. Black is developing a conscience and the reader was given a little taste of that in Mockingbird. In the Cormorant, it's a bit stronger and it was interesting to see Miriam wrestling with her demons. Also interesting was the fact that fate goes full-circle and eventually it does bite you in the ass, which is exactly what is happening to Miriam.

I enjoy the bouncy narrative that Wendig presents with his storytelling but I have to say in the case of the Cormorant, it wasn't as smooth as it was in the previous two novels and came across as rather frenetic at times.

Miriam, Miriam, Miriam. I just can't get enough of this girl. She's the kind of person with a vulnerability we can relate to, and a badass exterior we all wish we had. Chuck Wendig is an amazing author and I'll admit I'm a pretty hardcore fangirl of him and his blog. I bought the last two books as e-books but after buying this one in print I decided to go back and get the other two in print too, just to have them on my shelf. Yes, I'm that invested in this series. But don't let my shameless bias deter you from this sequel.

To offset this, I'll start with the weaknesses: 1) it ended 2) the next one's not out yet

The stakes are noticeably higher than before, and Miriam is constantly teetering on the edge of meeting the challenge, making every conflict count. Wendig doesn't add anything just for the sake of adding it. Every moment earns its keep, even the ones that seem like good clean fun (is there such a thing with Miriam? trololol). And there are consequences for each and every action, just as a good book and good characters should have. You'll be cringing and wincing and nervous and laughing and crying. It's a taxing read in all the right ways--you feel that connected to the characters and what they're going through. I'd call it an experience. Yes, that's a cop-out cliche but I don't care. Wendig writes his own spesho brand of "experience." If you read his blog or other books, you know what I'm talking about.

The best thing about this book is that it's not episodic; it's not just Miriam cruising along the plot doing Miriam things and having Miriam things happen to her. You can definitely see how she's developed since the last two installments, both in vulnerability and badassery. I can't wait to see where she goes from here!

For fans of the last two books, don't miss out on this!!
