I purchased “Ketone Power: Superfuel for Optimal Mental Health and Ultimate Physical Performance” based on the fifty 4 or 5 star reviews. However, personally I cannot rate this book as highly.

I have been researching health and fitness for almost thirty years. Within the last four years I have been researching and following primal/paleo/low carb diets. I’m a bit of a research junkie, who loves to read. Over the last four years I have read a long list of books pertaining to the subject, including: Wheat Belly; Grain Brain; Deep Nutrition; Good Calories, Bad Calories; Why We get Fat; Primal Body, Primal Mind; Sugar Busters; Pure White and Deadly; The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living; Fat Chance: Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity, and Disease; The Warrior Diet; The Primal Blue Print; The New Evolution Diet; The Paleo Solution; Keto Clarity; Nutrition and Physical Degeneration

Recently I have decided to move to a ketogenic diet based on the many positive success stories I’ve read in some of the books and information I’ve found online. Being a research junky I started to look for more books about keto (I completed The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living and Keto Clarity just prior to reading Ketone Power).

What I didn’t like about Ketone Power:
1. It is obvious that English is the author’s second language. While the material is perfectly understandable it is distracting and takes away from the flow when the English isn’t “Quite right”.
2. The book uses the metrics system. I understand that much of the world uses the metrics system, which is a more logical system than what we use in the U.S. However, if the author expects to sell a significant amount of books to U.S.

But what is "keto power", and why should I care ? Most people are not aware that your body can run on different fuels. Most of us "run", i.e. are fueled (in modern days) on "cabohydrates", another fancy way to say "sugar". But Christi Vlad maintains there is another more ancient, more ancestral fuel source. It's the fuel that man has preferred and successfully used for 99% of the time in his evolution, and it is the most "natural" Fuel Source.

That fuel is "ketones". I won't explain what they are here, Christi does an excellent job of that. Suffice it to say, "ketones" are "the" alternate fuel of choice if 1) You want to improve overall health. 2) Reduce markers for all types of "Modern" diseases (Diabetes, Alzheimers, Heart Disease, Parkinsons, etc. 3) Improve Mental Focus and Clarity.

This is where "Ketone Power" shines. Christi first explains what "ketosis" and "keto-adaptation" are, and the Science behind it. Secondly, he explores the kind of food choices you would need to make to achieve it. The food choices he presents are surprisingly tasty and easy to prepare, not at all any kind of "sacrifice" Next, he provides some "state-of-the art" Advice on exercise. For those of you who dread hours in the gym, this advice is for you. The "heavy" part of this exercise is only done once or twice a week, for a little as 12 minutes per session !! It IS possible to have the "abs" of your dreams, WITHOUT hours of drudgery in the gym ! He also offers some advice about dining out.

I've been following a low carb Paleo diet and thought that was enough, until I read this book and began to understand the basis of ketones and how they fuel the body and the brain!

The book is well written and engaging! The science is broken down in a manner that is easy to understand and the author logically explains things that just clicked and made sense to me!

Halfway through the book, I bought my ketone strips and decided this MAKES sense for me and is a step I am ready to take!

My weight loss has stalled and in reading this book, I am understanding why I have not been as low carb/high fat as I thought I had been!

When I first started researching ketogenic diets, everything I found was highly technical. Exhaustive explanations of the tricarboxylic acid cycle, acetoacetate, ketosis as a clinical condition, and so forth.

Ketone Power is a straight forward "user's guide" to implementing a ketogenic diet. This made adopting the diet so much easier. Sometimes you just need someone to break it down to the basic parts and Cristi does a fantastic job of that in Ketone Power. I definitely recommend this book for anyone interested in adopting a ketogenic diet.

Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
First, my favorite parts are chapters 1 through 5, explaining the science behind keto diet and keto adaptation. I thought the language was clear and compelling, and the use of references made the source of your information clear and linear. I thought the info on diabetes and a low carbohydrate diet was fantastic. But I also loved the recipes, and I would recommend your book to anyone interested in a "how-to guide to Keto". Every reader should be able to take away from this book the science behind what happens to our bodies during ketogenic adaptation and make an informed decision about how to make it work for them and their lifestyle.

The only thing in the book that I would question is the section on training. There are so many types of training and so many goals, it would be hard to tell readers what the best workout for a fat-adapted athlete can be. My primary goal as an endurance athlete doesn't focus on mass-building, but increasing work capacity and efficiency. Obviously, there are going to have readers who come to keto from many different perspectives, and I wonder if generalized exercise advice detracts slightly from a very-well conceived argument in favor of a keto diet. Personally, I would never use any exercise machines again, unless it was for rehab from an injury, and I would be very wary of any advice that would suggest that I use them.

Otherwise, Ketone Power makes a strong and clear statement about the benefits of being fat-adapted and how to apply it in real-world circumstances.
