Would have been a fun short story but the author really stretched it out, mainly with too much repetition. For example, it took about 2 hours of listening time to get through the first 15 minutes of action. The characters were likable though the narrator did make the heroine sound like a whiny 12 year old at times. If you're interested in the sexual relationship between the main characters, it was sparse and brief--more of a story about how a law-abiding cop deals with being placed in an unlawful position to stay alive. Interesting enough for a second listen in the future.

I wasn't sure that I would like Sleepwalker because I am not a big fan of books where the main characters are on the run through the book. Boy was I wrong about this one. This book will keep you on your toes with suspense from beginning to end.
Micayla (Mike) Lange is a cop spending New Years at her Uncle Nicco's house, when she wakes up after a nightmare. She is about ready to go back to sleep when she hears an odd noise. When she goes to investigate it, she walks into a crime scene. Jason Davis sees Mike and knows the plan has gone sour. Over the next few minutes, Mike sees pictures that changes her life as she knows it. Forced to make a run for it together, the two are in deep trouble with their lives in danger and not a lot of resources. The trust issue looms large between them which isn't good when you are trying to outrun people who want to kill you.
Ms. Robards does a great job keeping the suspense level high throughout the book. The chemistry between Mike and Jason is hot but in a sense somewhat forbidden. Mike is a cop and an honest one to boot, so the reader wonders how a relationship will work between the two characters. It is a romantic suspense book so you know that a romance will develop. I kept wondering how this was going to be resolved and was pleasantly surprised with the outcome. There are twists and a big red herring before it all ends. I started the book and couldn't stop. A great new book from one of my favorite authors!

I have read all of Karen Robards books and this one just didn't do it for me. As another reviewer posted this book just went on way too long about the 2 main characters in their getaway. Definitely not one of Karen Robards better books and hopefully next time she'll be back to her game.

While her family friend "Uncle" Nicco Marino is away, Detroit police detective Micayla "Mick" Lange house-sits his estate on New Year's Eve. A noise awakens her from the nightmare of her mom's murder. Mick investigates the sounds coming from Nicco's office. With her gun in hand, she catches Jason Davis, who thought the house was vacant for the holidays.

Mick sees the incriminating photos of the murders of Edward Lightfoot and his family. She realizes that the security cameras have caught her and Davis looking at the pictures. Knowing what that means, Mick and Jason take money from the safe and flee to the state's remote wilderness. Meanwhile Nicco's henchmen led by his security chief pursue them.

This an exhilarating romantic suspense as the lead couple play cat and mouse against a diabolical deadly criminal and his horde. Fast-paced throughout, the protagonists fall in love while on the lam, but they have no time for a respite as the enemy keeps on coming. Although why Nicco would ask anyone, especially a cop even if he loves her family, to baby-sit his house as he has super security who should have been the ones there, fans will appreciate Karen Robards' taut thriller.

I usually enjoy Karen Robards' books a lot, but this was not one of her better efforts. The plot was implausible; the heroine was not very appealing; and the hero--despite his good intentions--was still a thief and money-launderer.

If you want to read this book, wait until a cheaper version is issued.

I listened to this book as an audiobook, unabridged, and while the narrator did a credible job reading it, the story itself was absolutely terrible. *** Spoilers ahead *** Perhaps my impression could be in part due to the format-- I could not skip over the many bits of endlessly drawn out, cliche-ridden dialogue, the unbelievable story (frostbite anyone?), the continuity errors (how may pairs of handcuffs can a pajama-wearing lady have anyway??), and the improbable flip-flopping of motivations and character traits in our main heroine. I live in Canada and I know cold, and what it can do in the space of minutes, so all that traipsing around virtually barefoot with wet, "barely there" clothes... yeah right. Nothing like a good pair of socks to suddenly make you feel "warm"-- were they electric socks or something? I am generally pretty forgiving for these sorts of "light" thrillers, but this one... ugh. I stuck with it because after several hours of listening to the story on my daily commute, I needed closure. But those were painful hours indeed, almost comically so as my fellow commuters no doubt wondered about my head shaking and sighs of disgust. Do not recommend.

Normally, I would never have bought this book, but Amazon recommended it based on my reading habits so I bought it. I usually read Robert Crais, John Sanford, Lee Child, Sandra Brown, Greg Illes, etc. But I thought this book would be in that genre. As I got into the book, I thought at first it was a satire. Then I realized this was supposed to be a "real" thriller. Yeah, right. The dust jacket needed a woman with heaving breasts, ripped bodice, and a half-naked Fabio leering at her. It was that kind of story. The author's style of dialog was irritating. One character would say a line of dialog, then two or three paragraphs of mental diversion, then the other character would respond with a second line of dialog. I'd have to go back and read what the first line was to remember the context of the second line. And gawd, this book just stretched and stretched. Action took forever to be completed. I finally realized about page 200 that it is best to just skim all the "parenthetic paragraphs" between dialog and it helped move the book along.

The plot was weak, the characters not developed. I never did fully understand the detective's relationship with Uncle Nicco. Apparently it wasn't very deep even though the detective is friends with all Uncle Nicco's goons.

Not my cup of tea.
