Attorney Jim Shipman has done it again, written a compelling historical novel which has been meticulously researched and yet comes off as a readable story much like his 2012 release of Constantinople. This new story is about his family.

It is a tale of immigrants, a tale of promise and failure, of hope of loss. It is a story about the Americans. Mostly though, it is a story about values.
Jim’s Great, Great Grandfather is brought over from Ireland and more or less is an indentured servant in French speaking Quebec, manages to escape basically, although ultimately with the consent of his “employer” then find his family in New York; find love there too. Later Joseph Forsyth finds himself in a place where he needed $300 to pay a debt he really didn’t owe, by current standards, and rather than borrow from friends or his wealthy but agenda driven father in law, he accepts a bounty to join the New York Volunteers and head for the front lines of the Civil War in 1864.

This book should be read with a good dose of Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion behind you and a recording of Ashokan Farwell playing in the background. In this age where the likely choice in conflict is the cheap shot, the easy way out, lives are lead morally relaxed or the path of least resistance, and pleasure and leisure are the objectives, we are ushered into a time where there were indeed men who were men, in the most respectable reference to the term. Joseph Forsyth stands tall, and stands on his own two feet.

One has the impression Jim is relating lesser character types he may have encountered in his practice, none of his clients to be sure, but we will all recognize the drunk, the pampered wife, and the bully.

James D. Shipman has written a beautiful historical novel. It takes you along the journey of Joseph Forsyth from Ireland to the New World and through to the Civil War. Along the way, you get to truly experience Joseph's struggles and triumphs, with his family, his loves and the war. You will not want to put this book down. It is a must read! In fact, I can't wait to read it again! This is James' best work yet.

A great story based on real events that touch on Irish immigration, the challenges of work and family life with less than perfect families, the challenges of love and what drove some men to join up to fight in the Civil War. Because some of the characters were based on real people, historical documents show not all enjoyed a happily ever after. The characters were well developed. It was easy to love some family members, others I wanted to strangle. I could hear their voices. Intense, but sweet romance.

I chose a five star rating because I had a difficult time putting this book down to fix dinner or do anything else my family needed. The story line follows true historical events woven around the struggles of family life where the characters come to life. A book for lovers of historical fiction.

1849-1865, Joseph Forsyth (son, husband/father) lived with his parents: Robert Forsyth (husband/father, drunk, abusive, lazy, seldom works), Lydia Forsyth (wife/mother).
Joseph goes off to the Civil War & joins Company D, 186th NY Volunteers (Union).
His friend David (Union, married) is killed & Joseph is taken to the Union Military hospital (Petersburg, VA).
Rebecca Walker (nurse), & Dr. Thomas Johnston slowly nurse him back to health.
Joseph returns home his mother has died & the father remarried to Charlotte Forsyth (wife/stepmother). They have 1 daughter Jane Forsyth (1/2 sister).

Joseph adventures & mishaps keeps him either working for his rent/land, room/board &/or paying off his father’s extravagant gambling debts.
Along the way he meets nice PPL but they seem to take advantage of him.
Corporal Joseph falls in love & marries a very high-maintenance woman Lucy Forsyth (nee Hastings).
They have 1 daughter Mary Jane Forsyth.
Later the couple almost divorce.
Battles, heartaches, trials/tribulations, life’s ups/downs & romance. Everything 1 could ask for.

What will happen or become of all the major characters?

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written flip back/forth true/false pre/after Civil War era book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences.

What a sad novel. There's a saying that goes you can pick your friends but not your family. This poor man was a slave of his heart, but his father was the worst of the worst. Joseph was too good, but no one treated him honestly or fairly. But Joseph was a slave of his heart. Slavery of another kind, but just as cruel. Be prepared to shed a few tears. Very well-written.
