Husband loved this but he is an MMA encyclopedia too. hahahah....He did learn a lot of stuff still. He was hoping for more of the newer fighters but its hard to have that in this book because they are changing so much.

This book covers over 200 of the top fighters of all time, all the major mma organizations, the different disclipines in mma,the different positions, finishing holds, teams, etc. The best thing I liked about this book was the reference pages at the end with all the stats and event results of Pride and the Ufc. I would recommend this book along with Total mma as your starting point in collecting misc.mma books because in my personal opinon, they're the best.

This book contains every single thing you could possibly know (or want to know) about MMA. Really; I'm not exaggerating.

Not only does this book contain basically the complete history of MMA, it contains the guys that only the hardcore fans will know or care about--the lesser known guys who didn't really play a major role in MMA talent-wise but were part of the culture at one time (for one reason or another) and have since become part of MMA's mythos.

The MMA Encyclopedia lives up to its name. If you're just starting out in the MMA fandom, buy this book to become just as hardcore as the guys who spent the 90s on AOL usenet groups and exchanged VHS tapes they found in Japanese supermarkets. And if you're a hardcore fan, buy this book because you'll learn a thing or two and you'll be supporting *the* MMA historian.

Book is definitely interesting the only problem is the author is incredibly biased, and rather than having an encyclopedia you have "MMA as I see it by Jonathan Snowden". It does have some in depth entries (there is even an article for the Just Bleed guy) but they are ruined by the author putting his own spin on MMA history, skip this book unless its cheap.

Very authoritative, easy to follow, and the author does a great job at presenting the subject in great detail for the novice learner.

I don't consider myself a particularly nascent MMA fan anymore, I've seen most of the big fights of the past 5 years and many of the insignificant ones as well. But who among us has a perfect knowledge of all things? Certainly not I and pardon my presumptuousness but not you either. That's where the MMA Encyclopedia comes in. Confused as to why Vitor Belfort is viewed so highly by Dana White? Read his entry and a lot will be explained. Curious who the best fighter is? (The authors never make such a bold claim but I will tell you it's Ikuhisa Minowa, whose entry is fascinating.) And so on.
The writing is fun, light, and informative, the book achieves tome status in its size and scope, and it is just a handsome looking book all told.

I picked up MMA Encyclopedia a couple months ago and started reading. A friend of mine who is just getting into MMA asked where he could get more information. I stupidly showed him this book. I got it back about a week ago. I'm the co-author of Stitch Duran's From the Fields to The Garden, a book in competition with this one, but I was compelled to do a review because the book deserves it.

MMA Encyclopedia is the definitive book when it comes to education. Want to learn about Joe Silva, Smackgirl, Stand and Wang, Oleg Taktarov, Keith Jardine, or the Just Bleed Guy? They are all found in MMA Encyclopedia.

I've spent the last four years researching all kinds of crazy stories and tidbits on the sport and I still found many things I did not know. And thankfully the entries aren't dry like what you would expect to find with the title. The authors offered a lot of great facts, but mixed in a bit of their own thoughts and humor along the way.

I did not read this straight through. I bounced around and found entries that looked interesting and then bounced around some more. The book could be read straight through though. It also features "In their own words" sections that gives thought directly from the fighters or personalities. Great insight.

I highly recommend MMA Encyclopedia to new fans and the old school fans alike. Tremendous job Jonathan and Kendall.
