The failed raid on Dieppe remains one of the most controversial events in World War II history in general and Canadian military history in particular. Canadians of any age probably know about the horrific sacrifice of the 2nd Canadian Division in its first battle, with whole battalions slaughtered, unable to get off the shingly beach. Oddly, most Canadians probably don't know about their nation's other, more victorious battles in World War II, like the Liri Valley, Falaise, and the liberation of the Scheldt Estuary and The Netherlands.

For the past 70 years, historians (both armchair and academic) have pointed the finger of blame on the tragedy, and the generals and admirals behind it have sought to avoid the same finger.

Mark Zuehlke, an incredibly talented writer, historian, and researcher, has taken a different tack on this battle, focusing on the experiences of the Canadian (and British and American) warriors who made the raid, and told the story of this dreadful day, often from their direct point of view. The result is a riveting tale of valor, courage, and disaster.

In the same style of his series of books on Canada in World War II, Mark Zuehlke has given the reader a foxhole-eye view of the battle as well as the view from the command ship and conference room. This book will be of great interest to both the serious World War II student as well as any Canadian who seeks to understand his or her nation's (or in many cases, family's) history.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I provided Mark with books and research materials for this work, but played no part in writing it. He is a friend of mine, but I have not let that interfere with my judgment. I call 'em as I see 'em.

The benefit of 50 years perspective has been well used by the author. He weaves careful attention to detail with his trademark storytelling of the human experience - bringing the day alive from the perspective of the combatants. A true and compelling tribute equal to the courage, sacrifices - and mistakes - made that day.

An excellently written account of the lead up to and the battles of dieppe.
A tragically mismanaged preparation led to one of the bloodiest battles in Canadian military history.
A true and lasting shame that so many brave men had to lay down their lives But the account shines throughout with stories of heroism and bravery on a small scale. Not the stuff of legends but rather the small scale acts of courage and comraderie that truly matter on the battlefield.

As always Mark Zuehlke's books are a well written combination of historic accounts and insight.

Even though Tragedy at Dieppe was written long after the costly defeat, it nevertheless shows a carefully researched and full account of the mostly Canadian costly defeat. The Germans called it a folly, while the Allies studied the failed raid on that French town & concluded that only a more massive invasion would succeed & that would be postponed until the Allies were better prepared. How and why the raid was a tragedy is covered as well as an almost minute by minute of all the important events.
