Format: Paperback
A large number of slaves escaped terror, discrimination and slavery prior to the Civil War.England passed an anti slavery law ,The Emancipation Act ,that made slavery illegal through the British Isles and other British colonies, including Canada in 1833.That resulted in many Blacks escaping to freedom. One of the escape routes was via The Underground Railroad."This was not a Railroad per say,but a route where they were hid and otherwise helped to avoid capture.Blacks escaped to several Canadian Provinces, and other areas of Ontario;but this book covers only those who arrived in Toronto.
Even though 3 very knowledgeable, dedicated people collaborated in this book;it is very limited in any depth, has a lot of illustrations and under 100 paqes.About half of the book is about how a number of these Blacks did surprisingly well in starting businesses and becoming professionals such as Doctors,Lawyers and Ministers. If you want to learn much in the way of the methods, dangers, trials and tribulations that these people faced and overcame on the Underground Railroad, you won't find much here.It is interesting to note that in 1834 the name of York was changed back to Toronto, and the population was 9,000 of which 400 were Black.By 1850,Totonto's population exploded to 50,000 including 1600 Blacks (Actually a small part of the 30,000-40,000 Blacks who escaped the U.S. via the Underground Railroad). As an aside, once again,I am disappointed with a book that had financial publishing support from The Canada Council of the Arts and The Ontario Arts Council.
Note: The two words,Railroad and Railway qre tossed around here as if they are the same4. In the US the proper term is Railroad. In Canada, prior to 1867,it was the British who built the Railroads and used the British term Railway;not Railroad as in the US.These two terms remain the proper use.
