After years of writing a monthly newsletter called Cheap Chow, LeBan has developed a book that lists Chicago restaurants in which a main course, nonalcoholic beverage, tip, and tax cost under $12. Entries are divided by cuisine, neighborhood, price, and state of mind and are indexed by name and type of cuisine. Thorough descriptions of each restaurant emphasize atmosphere, menu options, and the author's familiarity. Honest appraisals discuss both positive and negative aspects of these eateries, allowing the reader to select based on personal preference. Unfortunately, wheelchair accessibility is not noted. While most useful to Chicago residents on tight budgets, this book may also appeal to the tourist crowd.
