This contains a detailed description of exactly how to rebuild you small-block Chevy. What I most liked about it was the practical checkpoints that it included, to check whether each stage of the engine build had been completed correctly. For example, when assembling the crank into the block it tells you exactly how much force should be required to turn it after it has been bolted in. This is invaluable for the inexperienced mechanic who is thinking "is it meant to be that tight?". The practical nature of the book is great: "this area is prone to oil leaks so add some sealant here (photo)". In summary, this book seems to have all the useful stuff that other manuals leave out and I would not rebuild my Chevy without it.

If you are rebuilding your chevy motor in stock form, this book is for you. If you plan on modifying your motor to any extent, it is too outdated and its suggestions for machining and assembly do not apply.

I have used this book in my business for about 10 years. It is used both as a reference and a training aid for my customers. It is indispensible and there is no other book in my extensive library to compare with it. I highly recommend it to both the novice and professional.

David Vizard's book should be in the hands of anyone planning to rebuild a small block Chevy. From teardown, to inspection, evaluation of parts, and reassembly, it's all here for both the novice and experienced wrench-turner. You may have to buy 2 copies...the first will be so grease stained that it might become unreadable! Don't tear down your engine without it.

It's not a bad book, but it seems to be written 25 years ago. LOTS of changes since then. That being said, the technology is exactly the same 25 years later so the basics are there. I'm still going thru it so this review may change as I get thru my rebuild.

UPDATE: Decided to return the book. I found another more recently written book with lots of pictures. Words do work, but it takes ~1000 to describe what a well taken picture can describe. Sometimes I read and re-read what I just read and then try to make that out from the black and white picture from 1972. No reason in this century to have a black and white picture in a book...

A really great step by step rebuild and considerations for those working on a 350 SBC GEN I and earlier. The book does reference engines from 1977 earlier so keep that in mind. Granted, 350 SBC's changed slightly into the 80's ( addition of fuel injection) so you need to account for this when using this book. Also wish some of the pictures were a little more clear but this was pre-HD!

Like a lot of other reviewers, my copy of this book completely fell apart after about 8 days of light use. So, it would be best to just take it to a print shop, as soon as you buy it, to have it punched and spiral-bound or put in a three-ring binder.

Otherwise, the technical specs and information are great. .....unless you're dealing with a 1986+ engine. If so, you'll need to track down another reference.
